Discolored headlights....

We just picked up a 2004 G35 coupe and the headlights aren't in great shape.

I will definitely use the search feature but I'm strapped for time and just wanted to get the question out there.

I assume others have had the problem...is the best solution picking up some replacements from eBay, from a salvage yard, or is there a way to restore them?

The discoloration appears to be on the inside...not sure how easy the lights come apart.

Thank you in advance!

If it's on the outside, then you can use one of the many headlamp restoration kits out on the market. Most attach to a hand-help drill and are relatively easy to use. Or if you already have some sort of polisher for your car, then you can try that with a light polishing compound.

If it's on the inside, then you'll have to open the headlamps. This requires you to heat them up (most people use either a heat gun or oven) to melt the rubber seal and then pull the lens away from the housing. I doubt the discoloration is really on the inside, unless the headlamps have been opened before.

+1

id say 99% percent of the time it is on the outside. most people assume it is on the inside b/c it doesnt simply wipe off from the outside. it does take a little elbow grease and a drill or buffer but they can be restored to as clear as they were from the factory with a little work.

Yeah...I can't feel anything on the outside, but I don't know how it would get on the inside. I'll pick up one of the kits this evening and try it.

Thanks guys.

Welcome to DRIVER Yank, if the discoloration is on the outside you can buy plastic cleaner/polish and remove it. If it's on the inside save your $ and buy a set of '06 G35 coupe projector headlights, they're 100% better than the OE '04s. I found mine on eBay, new in the box for $435 and they're plug & play.

its on the outside from oxidation. I got mine sanded down and polished at a body shop. They look brand new now
