Is it possible to either remove the wind deflector or keep it down ? It's basically held down by the glass when closed and when the roof opens, it slowly 'swivels' up. Problem is, it makes it much, much noisier when it's 'up'. You can reach up with your hand, push it down, and the moonroof is enjoyable.
My previous car (Honda Accord) had an aftermarket deflector that worked very well. Before I consider adding one of these, I want to see if others have the same noise, if they've added a deflector, if they've done something with the factory one, etc.
My moonroof makes a ton of 'buffeting' noise (thank you capt. slow) if I hold the little deflector down. With the deflector up, it makes no bad noises. I'm thinking there's something wrong with yours, as the deflector is intended to prevent the noise that I think you're referring to.
Anyways, the deflector is always being pushed up by a torsion spring, so I guess you could try to cut that spring, though it might result in some rattling. Maybe post some pics to try and diagnose what's wrong with yours?
Mine is the complete opposite of what yours does and without a doubt, yours is how it should work. The roof being open shouldn't be an almost unusable or undesirable experience. That said, it looks like it functions properly so I'm wondering if a piece is missing. Pictures are attached.
What year is yours? My '06 sedan has groves like the attached picture (not my car, but same deflector). Can anyone with a coupe weigh in on this? Functionally it seems normal.. it might just be an inferior design?
2006 coupe, I don't know why they would add diffusers there, usually you add them near the rear window because it causes the wind to pull down closer to the body and it's used to direct wind into the rear spoiler to create more down force rather than having all that wasted kinetic energy blow off the top of the roofline in a nearly straight line behind the vehicle.
Putting diffusers on the leading edge of a sunroof does indeed seem like an inferior design because it will pull the air into the cabin.
Granted it might be a stretch to call that piece a diffuser because it's so rounded off but I think that's exactly what's happening to your vehicle...
If I'm not mistaken, the '06 coupe has the same (basic) design as my '08 sedan ? It's the '06 sedan that has the diffusers (?).
I'd just solve this by getting a WeatherTech deflector but they don't offer one for '07 and later Gs. I really like the clip they use and no 2-sided tape is used. Just checked and it seems like those clips would work too. I might call them or email and inquire about this. Maybe they simply chose not to do fitments....
Yours looks the same as my 06 coupe. How fast are you going with the sunroof open? When I drive over the bridge to get to work I have to close mine because it's just too much whirring and wind gets strong on top of the bridge
Just normal around-town driving - up to 45 mph or so. I would rarely drive on the highway (65+ mph) with the roof open though I would like to drive up to 50-60 on 2-lane roads with it open, depending on the weather. As it is, it's not practical. If I were by myself, I'd just turn the audio up but two or people simply couldn't have a conversation as it is.
Ok I misread and didn't realize it was YOU having the issues with the sunroof, I opened mine when I went to the grocery store and paid particular attention to the amount of noise and wind coming into the cabin with the sunroof open and the windows up. My 2006 coupe has almost zero wind entering the cabin at any speed up to 55mph and there is almost zero noise as well. I'm curious why yours is having issues? I even held down the deflector manually with my hand on the highway to see if there was any difference and my daughter was complaining of her hair blowing around in the back seat when I did it so it does indeed make a difference but I didn't feel anything in the driver seat and my hair is almost as long as hers.
Does this only happen when the other windows are closed? You might be able to get rid of the excess noise by cracking the rear windows a bit to relieve the pressure. Not sure why they would have changed the design between coupe/sedan - I figured they were were all interchangeable AND identical.
