Metal flakes in oil pan! Ahhhhh!
I can't really tell from the picture but does the timing chain guide look like it's all in good condition?
Next up would be to pull valve covers and see what it looks like up top.

Ok I tore down my spare junk vq rev up to try and find something similar to the parts I found in mine but no luck. I’m just going to fix my gallery gaskets slap it back together and see what happens. If it does break I’ll just build my motor for boost then!
Ok if you're ending up with ball bearings then those are oil check valves, there will also be a little spring with them which explains the spring you found earlier too. The only one I'm aware of is in the oil filter sandwich adapter. You should pull the oil cooler sandwich plate and see if that's where the carnage started.
you ever find what that spring was for? I just pulled my oil pan yesterday and found the exact same spring😐
I still have absolutely no idea what it was from, my best guess was part of the rear main seal but still not sure. I haven’t driven it much after I put it back together, cause It’s getting body work done but I did put a lot of idle hours on it since and it runs and drives just fine. Hope yours works out like mine hopefully has!
