exhaust shootout

sometime ago there was a long thread about the Z magazine exhaust dyno shootout. They wouldn't publish on web because mag wasn't out yet. Has enough time gone by that someone could post results on this forum.

Re: exhaust shootout

Sounds are nice and all but wasn't that a DYNO shootout.....
And the winner is.........

Seriously what are the expected HP gains from the competitors?? This has been some sort of secret for some odd reason. Manufactures claims are nice and all but when a third party does the test on the same dyno with the same cars etc. Thats just golden. Can anyone share this info??

Re: exhaust shootout

here's what someone posted on freshalloy:

"Here's my initial impressions after reading the article and studying the small dyno charts.

All manufacturer's systems Hp and torque numbers were lower than advertised. Not a surprise.

They used two cars in the test. Car 2's baseline HP was about 1.5%-2% stronger. Torque difference was small.

Borla (car 2) = 8.2 Hp - 2.7 ft/lbs torque (peak values)
HP increase from 5500 rpm to 6500 rpm range. Lost HP & torque below 1800 rpm. 60mm pipe. Weighs 52lbs.

5Zigen (car 2) = (-3.4) Hp - .02 ft/lbs torque (peak values) Lost Hp, no real torque gain. Most expensive. Loudest. 58mm pipe. Lightest @ 25lbs.

Injen (car 1) = 7.6 Hp - 5.1 ft/lbs torque (peak values)
Small torque loss at 2800 rpm. Torque gain starts at 3300 rpm. Small Hp increase starts at 3300 rpm, maxing out from 5800 rpm to redline. Major loss in Hp and torque below 2200 rpm. 49lbs.

Nismo (car 1) = 6.3 Hp - 4.5 ft/lbs torque (peak values)
Developed torque and Hp over wide rpm range. Torque increase starting at 3000 rpm. Most HP increase from 4800 rpm to redline. No power losses below 1800 rpm. 54lbs.

Stillen (car 1) = 8.1 Hp - 7.3 ft/lbs torque (peak values)
Hp and torque increase starting around 3000 rpm to redline. Lost a little Hp & torque below 1800 rpm. 60mm pipe. 74lbs - 10 lbs heavier than the stock system.

For those who have the magazine, please let me know where we differ... the dyno charts are small and don't show torque and Hp graduations very well."

Re: exhaust shootout

Why are most of these exhausts losing hp/torque below 1800rpm's?

Re: exhaust shootout

Stillen pulled 7.1 rwhp and 7.3 ft/lbs torque rather than the 8.1 rwhp you show. Didn't their ads claim 15 hp gain?

Re: exhaust shootout

Ca_Kid,

Please site your reference for the Stillen hp correction.

My copy of Sport Z Magazine's Fall 2003 issue must be different than yours. If you look on page 41, Yuichi indicated the Stillen system made 8.1 Peak Hoursepower and 7.3 ft/lbs Peak Torque.

Re: exhaust shootout

Never did see the magazine, though not without trying. Everytime I sent to www.sportzmagazine.com and clicked on the "click here" for the 350Z Exhaust Shootout, nothing happens. Perhaps because I'm not running IE.
Anyhow, to answer your question. My authority comes from personally attending the event last July 26, 2003, and getting permission from Yuichi to take pictures of the shoutout results as they were written on the boards in the garage. His only admonition was to not reveal any of the results until the magazine was published, as they were paying for the event. Stillen clearly was shown as pulling 7.1 rwhp. I can not account for any different results for Stillen that may have been published.

Re: exhaust shootout

cliverman...

Whenever you free up an exhaust system, to where you eliminate some backpressure (for mid to upper RPM gains) you will in fact LOOSE low end power. This is a FACT! The trick with designing an aftermarket exhaust system is to somehow level this out by making certain the mid to higher RPM gains out weigh the bottom end loss, and for the most part they will, but its for this exact reason that some people with hooked up cars loose "light to light" or in other words short distance races to those who are running stock equipment.

You're not reaching the RPM band and speeds to where these mods will in effect start working, so in a sense, you may actually have lost some power, thus making you shake your head in disbelief while you say to youself - I dont get it.

1/4 mile testing is great, but in the real world, when you're buzzing around town, and you loose to some guy going light to light, who's got the same car as you in stock form, while you've spent all that time and $$$ in mods, and he hasnt, really does get to some!

The performance world works like a banks checks and balances system. You take some, you give some.

Re: exhaust shootout

ducatiguy...
Thanks for the info. If I understand you correctly, you don't feel that an exhaust change is beneficial for those of us who don't take our cars to the track? I'd like to get the most "bang" out of this car and exhaust was one of the mods I was considering. I'm also considering doing the crawford plenum but I don't know which is more important.

Re: exhaust shootout

nismo looks like no torque loss on low end, so no problem on the light to light races

Re: exhaust shootout

yes the nismo does not loose any low end torque. The injen losses a little and the others lost a some torque. The injen and Nismo would both be good for the streets
