When reading about the "instant" gains made when cleaing the MAF sensor on our cars I was sceptical. However, I cleaned mine today with CRC MAF CLEANER (bought at Autozone, socal, CA) and couldn't be happier with the results. I couldn't believe the difference, my wheels actually spun hard when floored with VDC off at a rolling start of about 15mph! I bought the car used at im at just under 28000 for an 03. and never had the wheels light up like that. For 5.99 this is definetly worth it...

 

Cool. For those of us (including me) who don't know, can you describe to us the process and how to access the MAF?

Mass Air Flow sensor. Its a sensor that is mounted in the intake duct between the air filter and the engine. Should only be two small bolts/screws to pull it out, just be careful with it since they are easy to break and are not cheap.

how many miles do u have on your car before u had it cleaned? wat year is it? coupe/sedan?

 

take that out and blast it with this crc stuff

I have a 2003 6mt coupe with 27,700 miles. The MAF cleaing is actually as easy washing your car...just have to go into uncharted territory if your a noob under the hood.

Right above the air box that holds the filter is cylindrical cone bolted to the box housing. Mid-way up theres a small rectangular box bolted in, thats the MAF, with a wire connected. Carefully unclip the wire connector, can't remember if you pull up with screw driver or push the clip it (comes off easily though). Take the whole unit and thouroughly spray with CRC cleaner, follow the instructions of directly spraying the small metal wire inside. Spray it 10-15 times, then set the entire unit down carefully on a towel to dry for 10 minutes. Carefully bolt the unit back in...and enjoy the horsepower that your engine can make...

ive heard of horror stories of people removing this piece and then getting stuck in permanent limp mode... any advice on avoiding this?

 

i worked at Nissan and alot of the expert 350z techs there told me to never take of the MAF, you loose hp plus you will not get it back that easy, if i remember right , it screws your whole computer set up for that part.... therefore Goodbye hp and Hello -hp

also it can be turned back the way it is......takes some time to tune it and set everything back to the original setup.

think it wouldnt matter if you got FI buuuuut i aint rich so i keep it N/A

well your techs vs a master tech that does this my dealership say different. cleaning the maf is good when you use a oiled aftermarket filter, but hey to each his own

Very easy to do. Just spray it and let it dry. As long as you don't touch it you are fine. Some people use a q-tip to clean it but, if you don't know what you are doing i wouldn't advise it since you could damage the wire if you are to ruff.
