Your father was told. No way he wasn't told, unless he tagged the car out of state - meaning the car is tagged in a state that doesn't require a front plate and he was driving in one that does. I just transferred my G from Texas registration and tags to Washington state and tags. Guess what? They handed me TWO TAGS over the counter. One for the front, and one for the rear. Even if he had the tags mailed to the house, they come as a set. Not to sound like a dick (too late!) but 'I didn't know' doesn't work. As a licensed driver, it's his responsibility to know. I find it hard to believe he didn't notice the other 99% of the cars on the road were running two tags.
Your father knew, and if he didn't know, he needs to get smart about traffic laws in the state in which he resides because he's causing his kid some pain.
I'm probably older than your dad while we're bull$hitting.
It isn't the end of the world. Chalk it up to experience and save it for later reference. It's inconvenient, but won't leave permanent scars on your paint. I don't know how old you are, but I'd be willing to bet that by the time I reached your age I'd been a lot further down the 'I fvcked up' road than you have...

That's been about 25 - 26 years ago now. I still, to this very day, break out in a sweat when I see cops coming up from the rear with the lights on - even when I know damn well I'm legal..
