what bothers me also is when i'm idle and in neutral..i hear this rattling from underneath the car that i suspect that has something to do with the clutch. when i disengage the clutch, it goes away. let go of the clutch, it comes back. let it rattle for about 5-10 mins and it eventually goes away. what is this?!

I have the same exact problem. comes and goes. honestly, it is kinda hard to hear from inside the car (unless you know what to listen for), but i feel so embarrassed when i'm driving in like a parking lot and i hear that clicking. for me, if i rev too high in 1st (like over 2k) and let the clutch go too slowly, then that noise is freakishly loud (especially somewhere that echoes, like next to a big wall). bleh... well, i'm at the Infiniti dealership right now for an oil change, and I told them I had rear axle clicking. I have to reschedule for the axle clicking (which they said is covered under the warranty), hopefully tomorrow. I agree with you, thinking the noise came from the clutch, but then again, I have no idea. Hopefully the rear axle IS the problem, so that they fix it and it goes away...PLEASE!! i freakin hate that noise...ugh...

Do our cars have aluminum heat shields over are exhaust system?
I had a RX7, and a couple years into ownership I started getting this annoying rattle/buzz sound when I took off in 1st gear.
It turned out to be the aluminum heat shields....the mounts broke, causing the pcs to vibrate under accerleration etc. I had to Clamp them down with hose clamps to the mounting points to eliminate the buzzing.
Maybe a heat shield is loose.....I never had the opportunity to look under my car, so its a possibility?

I also confirmed today that the rattling noise (sounds like a chain being dragged) was confirmed to be the heat pads. Many rattling noises can arise but the description (chain being dragged) is common to the heat pads. I hoisted the car with someone in it and found that the heat pans were in fact rattling while my mechanic was revving the car. Some pressure on the (very hot) heat pads would stop it. Nothing serious but the annoying sound is going to drive me crazy so I'll be buying some metal clamps to secure them...
