New Transmission...FINALLY! But some questions...
New Transmission...FINALLY! But some questions...
After 10 months of complaining about my transmission to all the dealerships in my area, I FINALLY found one that agreed that there was a problem and replaced my transmission for me.
I just got the car back and now I am trying to break it all in. The shifting is PERFECT again. Back to how it was when I first bought the car. Nice and smooth, no grinding at all. However, I have noticed 2 new issues, that I am waiting for the break-in to be done with before I start to complain about them...
1. My clutch catches SOOOOO high. My last 2 clutches caught right off the floor. It was perfect. So easy to drive. This new clutch (3rd one because the old tranny was eating clutches) catches all the way at the top. I feel like I am reving the car up for too long before it finally catches all the way at the top. The clutch has about 4-5 inches of travel before it starts to grab. I HATE IT. I keep stalling it out because I am used to it catching so low. Anyone else have this problem after getting a new transmission?
2. I think the new transmission (the '04 trans is what they told me they put in) is shorter than my old '03 trans. Here is how I figure this...1. When the shifter is in Neutral, it no longer sits in the center of the circle. It sits about an inch and a half closer to the dash board. 2. When I put the shifter in 1st - 3rd - or 5th gears, the actual shifter is touching the edge of the circle that goes around it. When I put it in 2nd - 4th - or 6th gears, it has a 2 and a half inch clearance in the bottom. 3. When I shift upwards, I pinch my fingers against that circle opening at time. 4. my shift boot won't stay down. It is sticking up into the air, and when I try to push it down, it pops right back up. It sits almost as high as the shift *** itself, and it looks STUPID! When you try to push it down, you can feel that there is rubber bunched up underneath it in front of the shifter where I think it is sitting further up. Anyone else have this problem? I want to try to take the shift boot off this weekend and see what is under there bunched up. One of my friends looked at it and thinks its the rubber padding that is under the boot to prevent noise from coming through all bunched up because the new trans is shorter and sitting further up than the old one. Any opinions on this?
Any opinions on either of these issues would be greatly appreciated.
PS thanks to all of you that helped me with getting the dealer to replace my transmission!

Re: New Transmission...FINALLY! But some questions...
It sounds like they need to better adjust the shifter assembly. I don't have a G35 yet, but my Audi got out of adjustment, the shifter was off center. Over time it was locking out of 2nd gear. They adjusted it several times and it was finally as good as new. Since your transmission is new, they may need to adjust it. I would think it should not be off center like that.

I'd love to hear from other people about their clutch-engagement point. The ones that I've heard mention anything about clutch engagement have all said that their pedal was most of the way up before the clutch would grab. (I hate this myself!). So how about the rest of you? Where does your clutch pedal engage?
I recall some talk about being able to adjust the clutch pedal to engage the clutch much closer to the floor, but the concern was that it would cause premature wear to the clutch. Can anyone confirm? If so, your clutch pedal engaging so low may be why your tranny kept eating clutches.
Just something to consider, and I'd love some good info. on this from you others.

Maybe you should disregard my post above. I did some digging on my own, which led me to freshalloy.com and dookiebob's clutch-pedal travel adjustment... ...on page 38! Wish it had been stickied. That cleared things up for me... ...but not before clouding the water nicely. lol

I did the clutch pedal adjustment about 3 months ago, and love it. It only takes a few mintues...it's a little tight down there, but it's easy to do.

G35 Clutch-Pedal-Engagement-Point Adjustment
Happy reading. Actually, quit while your ahead and take the initial claim that no damage can be caused by this adjustment UNLESS you go to the extreme one way or the other. You can skip to the end at that point to find what's considered 'too extreme'.

Re: New Transmission...FINALLY! But some questions...
Hey, I never noticed but my shifter is the same way (the differing gaps). I'm on tyranny #2 as well, and I'm not sure if #1 was the same. Can anyone else comment on the uneven gaps w/the shifter.....
Re: New Transmission...FINALLY! But some questions...
Can someone check their car and verify the shifter position please? I've got an appointment on mon w/my dealer for maintenance and would like to discuss this with them if abnormal...
Re: New Transmission...FINALLY! But some questions...
What was your initial problem? Was there a grinding noise or just a feel? I get a toothy, if that's the word, feel when I go from 1st to 2nd but no grinding noise. The dealer said nothing was wrong but man the shifter is not smooth on my car, I think the dealer is trying to shaft me

Re: New Transmission...FINALLY! But some questions...
Ironrice, my new transmission suffers from that behavior, except mine has progressed to all my up shifts (1-2, 2-3,3-4,4-5, and esp 5-6 now). My original transmission was very hard to up-shift into second gear (ie. 3-2, 4-2).
But what I was looking for feed back on is the differing gaps between the shifter shaft and the hole in the console for the shifter. My shifter rests very close to the console in odd gears (1-3-5) and much further back in even gears (2-4-6) just as G35Girlie described in her original post. I was trying to see if this was a normal positioning of the shifter or if it was a product of the new transmission that was installed by my dealer.
