Question PURCHASE OF HIGH MILEAGE 2003 coupe? good or bad idea? HELP PLZZ...

Hey everybody,

this is my first post on G35driver.
Im currently looking for a G35 coupe in montreal canada. I have access to the dealer auctions and ive got two choices of cars.
1. 2003 G35 coupe, black, 6spd Man. but the car is a wreck. The car has 268000kms. drivers window is out and the car needs a front end paint job. but the motor runs well. all gears work. The car at the auction will probably sell for about 6500 canadian dollars. roughly 4000$ us. which is an amazing price for this car but not the mileage. This car would allow me to put in roughly 4$ dollars in mods and have a beautiful car. but i am very concerned about the mileage. What kind of problems will i most likely run into? this car is to be an everyday driver. Is this a terrible idea? should i go with the option 2 which is a 2003 coupe. silver. auto . 80000kms? roughly 16000$ canadian? which could be the best bang for the buck?
please reply quick the auction is tomorrow,
thanks

Atott

Great thread where we can provide you good insight. These cars, much like every other car, will have major repairs needed after 80K. Those repairs are not cheap, I know first hand. I have a 2K SE Maxima with 233K and have replaced: front end parts, starters, alternators, among other things. The reason this repairs have been minimized by me keeping the car heavily maintained. I've had my Max. since it was new. My point is, unless you know the first owner and know what kind of maintenance has been performed on the car, it's a very big risk. Repairs can be very, and I do mean very expensive. In the long run, once you fator in the car's limited resale value, even after repaired, the initial savings might not be al that great. Just food for thought.

thanks for some of the insight so far, but put it this way. would you buy the car if. you knew the vehicle was kept in order including services. interior was immaculate. appears to have many freeway miles. good sounding enhine and exhaust. also all gears and clutch works.?
really in a tight pin here tonight, not to sure which car to get. the high mileage would become somewhat a project car. 20 inch staggered. catback exhaust. lip kits. possible engine swap if engine dies. this is why i am drawn somewhat by this car withj high mileage./

260,000 km is 160,000 miles? Isnt there guys here with that much mileage saying their car is running strong?

You're much better off finding an '04 with 50k miles or less that's been taken
care of. Repairs on our cars are major bucks, you don't need to buy a car
and then start throwing more into it....you won't be a happy owner/driver!

I got a 04' wit 110k miles running strong... I just did transmission service, rear differential service, belt change, radiator flush over the weekend... It runs strong if it wasnt for the odometer I would say that the car drives like it has 60k miles... I test drove some 6 spd manuals that had half the mileage that mine has that were in far worse condition...

Next up suspension mods and some engine mods....

Except for the fact that it's not a stick, it's a perfect specimen. Might as well start searching threads about must do mods. Post pics as soon as you get it. Black cars are really sweet. GL with the purchase. See if you can get them to come down at least a thousand, you'll need tires soon at that mileage.

thanks 2K for the feedback. Only reason id rather get auto is because i live in Chicago. Ive had numerous past cars that were stick and in the city its more of a hassle, especially driving in stop and go traffic everyday. I will post pics asap after purchase
