my gas gauge was reading incorrectly, and i could only pump to halfway (10 gallons) twice (every other time it was fine), so i took the car to the dealer (04 coupe)...

they "fixed" (dont know yet) the gas gauge problem, but now the gas tank NEVER fills up past halfway...

so i dropped the car off at Infiniti. they called me 15 minutes later that the valet key wont start the car, so I came back to give them the real key.
they told me that i can take my car home cause i need a new GAS TANK that was just designed/ built... apparently the "flap" sticks and only lets the tank get half full.

the new and improved gas tanks are on back order, and will be available in 1 week to 1 month, which probably means 2 months...

anyone else have this problem of the gas tank NEVER filling past half?

Yeh, there are lots with gas tank/gauge issues. Most have been told it's the gauge or sending unit. I believe you are the first to find that it's the 'flap' at the base of the filler neck.
I had this same issue on a Ford Contour long ago and thought this might be our problem with the G's. The only one to be told of this fix so far is you (that I know of).

I'm sure there are many who have sending unit, and gauge problems, but it is probable that there are many who have the same issue are you do too.

Let us know how it is after the new tank install.

I had a problem with my gas gauge as well. I took it in and had the dealership check it out. At first they could not find anything wrong and gave the car back to me. I took it back and they checked again, and this time they found that the sending unit was bad. They replaced the whole sending unit (pump and all), and I haven't had any problems since.

yeah they replaced both of mine...
but the major problem here is not filling gas to full tank...
it sucks having to go to the gas station twice as much now!

I drop my car off in about 45 minutes so Infiniti can figure out why I am having a difficult time putting gas in my car.

In my situation, my gas guage is fine and it fills up completely. What has been happening consistently, without fail for the past 5 months since the car was delivered, is when I first start pumping gas into the car. It either shuts off immediately or backs up and overflows onto my car. This happens for the first 1.5 - 2 gallons of gas. I have to squeeze the trigger for 2 seconds at a time and then after about 2 gallons, I can squeeze the trigger all the way and it fills up completely and shows full on my gas guage. It's the first 1.5-2 gallons of gas that is a pain in the butt .

Has anyone else experienced this specific problem? Hopefully by the end of the day I can post a fix on this forum.

Well, well, seems like our coupes do have a gas tank/gas flap problem. I am in Montreal and have the Canadian batch of cars :-) It's a 2004. I took a trip to Wildwood, New Jersey from Montreal for vacation, and everytime I stopped off to fill her up, I had the same issues. The pump would keep cutting out as if the car was full. I would try pulling the nozzle out to trick the pump, but I had the nozzle almost halfway out of the tank which I found to be abnormal. After about 20-30 seconds or so, I would push the nozzle all the way in and then I was OK. I guess we need to find a way to flag this to Infiniti, I smell a gas tank recall on the way....

Update on my previous post.

My local dealership just told me this morning they are confirming with Infiniti that my entire gas tank has to be replaced. When I receive confirmation, I'll post an update.

interesting... i think i need the walbro 190 pump change!!lol

 

yes i'm sure this will be a recall sometime soon... the tanks are on back-order. let us know when you guys get it fixed, i'll do the same.

Yes, I'll definitely let you know the outcome and I look forward to sharing the info with our forum brothers and sisters. This gas tank issue has been problematic with many, but it doesn't appear to have the same symptoms or solutions for all. I'll know more tomorrow (Tue).

And yes, I'm sure we are both using the same dealership.

Mine has also done this on occasion. About 4 times since I have purchased it back in July of 03. It has not happened enough yet to **** me off and take it back in, "yet".

I already took my coupe in for the gas tank problem, they changed some parts, and it filled up to F for one time, now it won't go above 2/3rds. What's up with this thing? Maybe I need a new gas tank.

 

I also bouight my coupe on july of 03. Just a week ago my passenger side window got stuck in the lowered position, but ive been having the gas tank/gauge issue for about 5 months now but i never got around to taking her in till my window started to act up. Turns out they ordered the sending unit....hopefully that'll fix her......"hopefully"
