Gear Shift Difference
Gear Shift Difference
Avid reader on these forums, but having been an owner of my 06 G35 Coupe 6MT for about a year now, this is my first post about an issue with my car
I had the annoying and worrysome 'water gushing' sound from under my dash start last week. I read about the problem on here, and so I took my G to the dealer to get the air system bled and the water dumped/changed. Having gotten my car back, the water gushing sound is gone (and the heater works better), but a new problem:
I had a really hard time adjusting to the gear shifts in my G, but I felt like I had finally gotten it down pat these past few months. Suddenly, having gotten the car back from the dealer, the shifter feels "loose" and as if it's missing oil/lube between the gears? The best way to describe the feeling is that i feel like there is 'lube' or oil missing in the gearbox now, so when i go from second to third for example, I FEEL the shaft of the inner part of the gear touch the indented area inside the gearbox.
Does anyone know what I mean?
Trying to figure out what the dealer could have done to cause the gearbox to feel so weird/loose.
They gave me a complimentary Infiniti interior/exterior carwash. I'm thinking they may have wiped some oil/grease off when the car was mounted up -- which may be causing this..?
I live in Montreal - temps of -30C might be contributing to SOME of the weirdness I'm suddenly feeling (though it doesn't go away when the car warms up, and it's been pretty damn cold the past 2+ months and this issue never manifested before). Car has 61000km on it. Tranny oil has never been changed before, and nothing else besides the air/cooling issue was addressed on this visit to the dealer.
I know this is vague, but I'm hoping someone has an answer for me.

I hate to say this put maybe someone had a little too much fun in your car and ripped up the gears while it was at the stealership...
bleeding the air system should not have anything to do with your gear box or the lube near the guide plate and knuckle.

you are the unfortunate person of bringing your car for one thing, and something else happens to break.. it probably isn't the dealers fault and it sounds like it could be your sychros.. it's funny.. but something always happens to our cars if we leave them in the hands of others.. it was probably gunna happen anyways.. keep us posted..
my shifter sort of feels like what your describing as well, but only when its quite cold, such as -12 degrees celcius and colder, and anything below -18 and it won't go away even after you've warmed your car, its just one of those things, cars run sh*** in winter. just wait till a day when its around 0 or warmer and feel the shifter, should be smooth
wouldn't hurt to have the tranny oil changed tho

Hey there int. I'm from Montreal too so I have a pretty good idea of what you are talking about.
I have taken my 2006 6MT to the dealer about this and they told me its "normal". I have also done some research, and many people are experiencing this problem. The gears feel very mechanical. When I bought my G last year with 17k KM, it didn't do this. It started doing it a couple of months ago, and it was a rapid change in behaviour. I think it just takes a while for the G tranny to break in....
I even got a tranny fluid change at the dealer....that was a waste of money
What I ended up doing is ordering AMSOIL transmission fluid last weekend
Synthetic Manual Transmission and Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90 API GL-4 (MTG)
I paid $65 US shipped to my door and it took 1.5 days

If you order some, say jardolei referred you!
It did not eliminate the problem at 100% when cold, but its better.
When the trans is warm though, boy its soooooooooo much smoother!
If you ever see a 06 G Coupe in Liquid Platinum in MTL during work hours, say hi! My windows are tinted

Synthetic fluids under extreem cold/hot conditions aren't effected like OE fluids. I use Red Line but Amsoil is a good synthetic too, either one will make your trans work smoother....

You guys are awesome for chiming in on my vague explanation of my issue!
The synchro suggestion totally makes sense, though it didn't the very first day. What changed is that today, on my way home from work an hour or so ago, I had a hard time shifting into second in the parking lot at work. However, since getting it from the dealer, I've felt like it was EASIER to shift into gears, just felt 'mechanical' (as jardoeli put it!)
I'm going to swing by the dealer tomorrow morning before work and see what they have to say, or at least make them aware of the issue so it gets recorded in my file or whatever --- because, due to the cost of the repair, I'm sure they won't admit to a synchro problem right off the bat!
Awesome - I've got a Silverstone (Charcoal Grey) 06 G Coupe; the thing that stands out about mine are the bright Lexus-style license plate lights, and the front clear corners. Say hey if you notice me anywhere =)
Thanks again guys!

most common bad syncro gears are 2nd and 5th. I had a grinding noise in 5th. took the infiniti mechanic for test drive, moments later their ordering me a new tranny.
if I shifted slowly, no grind. Shifted normal, it will grind..

Hey, INT is your dealer Spinelli Infiniti? Thats where my G is from, but since I live on the south shore, I go to Park Avenue in Brossard and I HATE THEM
Their service is one of the worst services EVER. Period.
I will never go back, or I might end up punching one of them
Please post up what your dealer tells you about your trans issue, since I might get it checked out again.
As LightsOut described:
"if I shifted slowly, no grind. Shifted normal, it will grind.. "
Thats exactly what I get when cold on the first couple of shifts...
After 2 years of reading on G forums, and having my G for 1 year.... it gets easier! lol

If it's a bad synchro, it'll get progressively worse, right? I figure I'll wait till it's obvious (but before my warranty expires, though it's a lease and the 4-year warranty expires when the lease does in Sept)
Not sure what you guys are describing about the 'grinding'. Is it a sound, or a grinding FEELING with your foot coming off the clutch between shifts?
