To Shift, Or Not to Shift?

This is my last question before I decide.

I'm stuck between 6MT or 5AT. Is there anyone that regrets not getting a 6MT or vice versa? Theres a lot of traffic where I live. If anyone knows what HWY 280 in Bama is like. But I think I can bare it everyday. Also, is the 6MT much faster then the tiptronic?

-Thanks again

I owned 6mt before (04) I now own a 06 5at.
As far as shifting I guess it all depends, my 04 had a weighted **** and I've driven manual for years and for me clutch was never an issue.

My current 06 5at has the vb upgrade and a few other things so I don't experience any shift lag..

Do you think since you don't have shift lag in the auto, that you would be even with a 6MT?

I don't think stick is hard once you're used to it, my 6mt was my first manual car. Once you get it down it's almost like you're driving automatic because you don't even have to think when you drive(in my opinion). And you feel cooler with a manual transmission car

Yea, this will be my first 6MT. I'm looking at a 04 with 75k I think if I can remember for like $14,995.

it will take you a week or two to get comfortable, but after you have comfortable control of your car, you will have access over a whole new area of control while driving. i love my 6mt, and would not trade it for any 5at

The 6MT has the advantage of having an extra gear over the 5AT. That alone is going to mean that it will always win if everything else is equal (same mods).

It would probably take a good bit of mods for a 5AT to beat a 6MT.

For example, I have a 6MT. I was in the car with my brother driving. A 5AT pulled up behind us and at about 45mph the 5AT gunned it and jumped over a lane to pass us - he probably was going by at 55mph or so (10mph advantage).

We were in 4th at that time. My brother dropped it into second, wound that out and shifted to third and pulled half way through that to about 70mph.

In that short burst, we went from being 10mph slower than the 5AT which was passing us to being about 3-4 car lengths ahead.

Hopefully that gives you an idea of how big a difference in performance there is. My car did have an intake and lightweight pulleys.

I would without a doubt choose the 6MT myself, no matter the traffic. Sometimes it can get a little annoying if you are going slow enough where you need to clutch every 2 seconds, but usually I can at least let it idle in 1st.

All the cars I've ever owned until now have been MT with the exception of my wife's Vettes. Most of our members that have the 5AT with the shift kit believe it shifts quicker than MTs, and you don't have to deal with all the headaches of a clutch/throw out bearing with all it's noise/chatter....
