Manual Shifting an Auto

I have the '06 auto and I think it might shift for me automatically if I redline in first gear only, not sure though.,
As for the lag in shifting, if I am hard on the throttle and high in the RPMs it shifts *very* fast, but yes shifting up while gradually driving is a bit slow.

Sorry, but you are wrong. I have a 2003 5AT purchased in December 2002 (Build date October 2). It does not automatically shift at redline it bounces of the rev limiter.

That's weird, I have an 03 and mine automatically shifts for me before redline in manumode. Only reason I made the original statement. I didn't realize that later models don't do it, but it sounds like even earlier models dont. Question is, why does mine?

It's not "Bad", per say, but if you do it all the time, it will wear out your auto transmission quicker than just using the brakes. If I owned an auto tranny, I would avoid doing the downshifting as a means of braking unless I was doing very aggressive driving.
Auto transmissions have a bunch of little clutches in them, and they wear out over time. Regularly doing maneuvers such as compression braking downshifts will accelerate the rate of wear on those components in your transmission.
