Question Radar detectors – do they really work?

I’d love to be wrong, but…

In my life I’ve purchased 3 different radar detectors – verdict was the same in all three cases – return for a full refund.

Why? Cause they simply aint doing the job. I had a cop shooting straight at me the thing kept silent, oh yeah, if would go off on occasions when someone would try to open a garage door. My wife is joking that these radars detectors are actually programmed to work for cops, not you. There’re cops on this forum, what do you guys say /use?

How’s the V1 works for you guys out there? Feedback is appreciated or and some good/bad stories about anti-radars.

tnx

No detector is 100% bullet proof. But I can tell you that my Escort 8500 saved my a$$ multiple times and has practically paid itself off. However, even with a detector you always need to use common sense. Never speed in unknown or dark roads, or around hidden curves and such....

As long as you get a good brand (Escort or V1 are great), and use some common sense and drive in a responsible manner, you should be good.
I'm glad I got mine 3 years ago. I have yet to get any ticket since (knock on wood).

Good luck.

My V1 is about 9 years old and still works pretty good. I will be sending it in soon for an "upgrade" for $285. It's time to take advantage of all their upgrades since then. Since my detector is so old, the upgrade consists of just sending me a totally new one in this case.

The biggest thing is don't drive too fast when you're all by yourself. I always do my speeding with other traffic.

I love my V1. Yes the Escort one is nice, but when you get used to your area were it beeps normally, you get lazy and the V1 tells you that there is another threat instead of the normal one. I live right next to a military post were they use radar consistently. I drive by a Hess gas station all the time and my V1 reads 1 bogie. One morninbg cruising along it beeps like normal then..beep a second bogie. It turned out to be a MP sitting at the Mcdonalds parking lot. Did I tell you I LOVE my V1.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but:

I bought the cheapest model at Radio Shack for around $50 and it works SURPRISINGLY well. It's saved me more than a few times and has definitely paid itself off. My friend bought one too and he's had the same results.

It's picked up cops around corners, over hills, etc.

If you are smart about it, they will save you. I use a V1 and for me the value of the bogey counter and directional arrows make it worth it. If you are going to go 100mph you will get caught radar or no radar. If you want to be consistently 20mph over the radar detector will help you do that.

I have used Escort products for, I guess 20 years.
I still have one of the original Escorts in my tool box.
So, I tend to like them. If you want to go the extra dollars for a V-1, do so. Everyone that has one, swears by it.
I just like Escort products.
Like it was said before me , use your head and it will save your ***.

Laser?

You might have just bought a radar detector and the cop was lasing you--cheaper models don't pick up ladars. Where I live, most of the cops used laser radar, so they have you cold along with a picture of your license plate. It's hard to pick up laser scatter, but pays to be traveling among other vehicles as others have stated.

I've been using Escorts since 1980, and my 8500 saved me twice this weekend on one trip. Way, way more than paid for itself.

I have V1 and I have to say I love it. It paid for itself the 1st month I got it. Yea it's hella sensitive but it keeps me on my toes and V1 gives you a general direction where bogie is.

Actually, the 8500 has a selectable display where one of the modes will tell you the number of radar sources and their strength as a bar graph. So you would also know if there's a second source hiding behind the primary source.

In anycase, a radar/laser detector is not a cop detector. If you're lucky, it'll give you an advance warning, but don't be too dependent on it.

Hold on, hold on a second… now I am confused… so basically, what these all means, if I drive by my self or am a very first car in traffic, radar won’t catch a cop who’s in front shooting?

I thought that was the whole point of that thing, to hide you from the radar if it’s far away or at least worn you if you’re up to close.

Those that I had were cheap and crappy. Well, crappy because they didn’t work. Have you heard about those “stealth” radar detectors, the supposedly hide you from the laser or any other wave-oriented radars? Is that a myth or true stories?

Does V1 or Escort offers money back for any reason? I do not doubt your experience with radars, I only asking this because I burned my self on several occasions while using anti-radar.

And just like previous comment from xswl0931, if I can’t really depend on it, why spend $300+?! To me it sounds like a consultant job – consultants tell people what they already know and get paid big $$$ for doing that….well can’t complaint, that’s how I make money …

Thanks G-eers
