03 coupe and need a new engine

So I am obviously brand new to the forum. But I looked all over online and this place seemed to have the most knowledge in regards to g35s in general, so I decided that this is where I would ask my questions.

Three weeks ago I was driving my car down the freeway. I had gotten it back from the mechanic about a week prior. He had replaced a cam shaft sensor, at least that was what the code that he pulled up from the "check engine" light.

Anyhow, as I am driving it begins to make a horrible noise, like nothing I have ever heard and then completely dies on me. I get it towed to my mechanic the next day and he tells me that the engine has completely seized and that a rod has shot through the oil pan. Basically says that I am going to need a new engine.

So I ask him how something like that happens and he said that it had no oil in the engine, Yet the oil light was not on and he confirmed that he has checked the oil the week before when it was in the shop.

SoI ask him how much it is going to cost and he tells me about 2k for an engine, 1 k to install it and as much as1500 to pull the bad motor out. The 3k to install a new motor, I can deal with, but 1500 to pull out the bad one sounds crazy to me.

Let me preface the rest of this by saying I know little to nothing about cars in general. He mentioned that because the engine is seized that there is another part that he needs to get to to remove some bolts and that it is difficult with the engine the way it is.

So I guess I have a few questions for everyone here....

1. Does anything he is telling me sound right?

2. What range should I be looking at to get a new enigne>

3. Are there any cheaper alternatives that anyone could recommend?

4. Do I need to get another 03 coupe RWD engine? Or are there other engines that are easily compatible, in regards to an engine swap?

5. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where I can look for a used engine?

6. Does anyone know of a good mechanic for this in Arizona?

Thank you for all of your help with this. This has been a nightmare and I am really hoping to find out some answers at this forum.

$4500 seems exessive for an engine swap. Call around and ask for estimates.

Look for a Nissan/Infiniti auto dismantling place. They usually have good engines for cheap.

If this is the same mechanic that did your cam sensors and possibly caused your engine failure I'd stay away from him. You need to find a qualified Nissan mechanic that will do the job right and reasonably....Gary

1K to install and $1500 to pull the old motor? This guy is a sham if that's his rate.... straight to the A$$, no lube, no reach-around, rape.

Labor to swap a motor should be no more than $1200... typically you're looking at $600-900 labor for a swap depending on how difficult the car type is to work on(some require removal of the front bumper, etc).

^^ he's right.

I have an 04 coupe and I had to replace my engine due to burning oil.

I got another engine with 80,000KM (50,000mi, I'm in Canada) for $1100 and the labour was $900. Altogether $2000 and that included fluids and everything.

Since you're in the States I'd expect things to be cheaper.. look for another mechanic.

That mechanic is mostly likely the reason you need a new engine. Investigate, see if you can get it paid for by him by finding his mistake.

Check the regional forums SirBoostAlot does mechanical work for our cars, I don't know if he can do an engine swap, but he has done many for a lot of people in phoenix and his rates aren't bad.

I am located in Phoenix, AZ. I am dying with out my car right now and really need to get off my *** and get it taken care of.

I called Pitstop today. They said they specialize in Infiniti and NIssan sportscars, but to be honest, they quoted me around 4k total, which is about what my mechanic said. Granted I rather have them do it, but still want to find something less expensive.

I am looking to spend 3k tops if possible. So we will see. I am going to try to contact Sir Boost Alot as well.

Thanks again.
