it was a TSB for rev ups. People's replacement engines were even still munching oil.

Man this sucks, I thought the 04 didn't burn oil...it's weird though because It drives great. I put 1L of amsoil to try and top it off but now it's only at 75% on the dipstick. Is a compression test worth it? And should I try German Castrol 0w-30?

 

How many miles have u driven since the change? 75% also doesn't mean ur at 75% of 5qrts. The stick isn't proportional to full capacity.

 

Well if it hasn't been cared for the rings can get damaged. Get a new (used low mileage) motor off CL and get a compression test on that before you buy it.

 

The car only has 100k kilometers on it how can it burn this fast. And I drove now that I think about It I don't even think it was 300 km.... Well if it's burning then what conventional oil should I use? And roughly how much would a swap cost? Am I better off selling the car?

 

U shud check ur valve cover gaskets. An 04 shouldnt burn anything at that mileage, usually around 100k those go bad,That's a really low mileage. I use pennzoil gold 5 30.

 

I know more people with 04 oil burners than I do revup consumption victims. My understanding is that synthetic oil is a little thinner and actually burns faster, try changing to conventional, 5W-30. I use Castrol GTX.

My co-worker had his engine replaced recently (spun bearing) in his 350Z and it cost him around $2K installed for the engine and labor.

 

Do I have to do a flush or something if I am going going from synthetic to conditional? And I will check gaskets thanks

Synthetic is actually less prone to burning. And no flush is necessary to go from one to another. Remember, there are synthetic blends, so mixing the two is no biggie.

If you're tailpipe is spitting out a lot of carbon, I don't think the valve cover gasket would be the issue. The extra carbon is from the oil.

 

synthetic is tougher against break down and "burn" off, but wherever the oil is going through, synthetic will get through through easier as it flows more like water.

 

That may be true, I've never read up on its flow characteristics specifically, but I would think the viscosity (weight) would suggest that they'd run the same, no?

Just as a side note tho, oil does not break down. It becomes polluted/contaminated and the added detergents become depleted. The oil itself stays the same molecularly. That's why its able to be recycled.
