Faulty Fuel Gauge/Fuel Sender

Recently, the fuel gauge on my 2005 G35 started reading incorrectly. At fill-up it shows more than FULL, and after 300+miles of city driving when the gauge should be near EMPTY, it still reads a little more than 1/2 a tank. Any suggestions to repair?

G35 Recall Issue

It seems like there is quite an exchange concerning issues with G35 fuel gauges not being an accurate representation of actual fuel in the tank. I found a recall on the 2003 - 2004 M series Infiniti, but nothing on the G. I wonder why? Anyone have any ideas? I appreciate sharing DYI repair suggestions on the fuel sensor. Thanks!

hard to say for certain, but based on my overall experience with varying makes and models of cars it is typically the float or sensor strip in the tank that causes the cluster gauge to read incorrectly.

I would start there. I unfortunately do not know what sort of sensing system they use in the Infiniti

Thumbs up Faulty Fuel Gauge/Fuel Sender

Thanks for the reply. I've seen a few exchanges on this site that reference cleaning the wiper-looking resistor that moves in conjunction with the fuel float with Q-tips and that's resolved the issue. I'm trying to determine if that's within my DIY scope or if I should have the dealer do it. Initially, the dealer quoted me a rather strong quote siting a rather extensive amount of labor in 'diagnostics' to determine the exact issue and repair. If they would do it for $200 or less, I'd probably have them do it.

Mine misreads also. But when I fill mine up the gauge never goes to F, then after a few miles itll be on E with gas still in the tank. Let me know what you find out, its kinda annoying.

I am in the same boat. Mine never shows completely Full but Ive learned to just pay attention to mileage. Would also like a good fix to this without going into much labor. Seems this is more and more common on the early models.

Thumbs up Faulty Fuel Gauge/Dirty Fuel Sensors

My apologies for not being fluent in searching yet. I've only been on this board a few days and my post about my G35 fuel gauge issue was my first post. BTW, most, if not all of the posts seem to reflect not being able to fill up and register FULL! That's not what is happening with my G35. My fuel gauge goes well past FULL, but will only register slightly more than HALF when I'm empty! Thank you for posting the other threads to review.

Did you ever figure this out?

I'm having the same issue and have had both sending units replaced with no improvement. The issue is exactly as the OP described: When I fill up, the gauge goes a bit above full, then slowly decreases to around half a tank when on empty.

(This paragraph is pure speculation...) It seems like the setup is that each sending unit sends a value indicating somewhere on the spectrum of "empty" to "full" (let's say 0 is empty and 10 is full), then the car adds those values together to get the actual gas gauge value (so on the gauge, 0 is empty and 20 is full). For some reason, either a sending unit is always sending 10 for full, or the car (cluster?) is reading it wrong.

I just got a quote from a Nissan dealer that it would cost $900 to replace the cluster in my car. I'm already out $700 for sending units and I'm not sure I want to go for another $900.

EDIT: I'm driving a 2005 G35 sedan with about 90k miles on it.

Here is something I found from an Infiniti Tech. You can try testing the self cluster in diag mode.

Hold the trip reset buton and turn the ignition on. Now push the trip button 10 times in about 5sec. This will enter self diag mode. All the needles will drop now push it and hold all the needles should go. halfway. If the fuel gauge needle sticks then you have your answer.

Coffeysm, thanks for your reply. I found that test also, and ran it several times. I can't be sure, but I think that test is showing that my cluster is normal.

When I run it, the engine temp gauge is slightly below horizontal, and the fuel gauge is as well. It's possible the fuel gauge is slightly lower, but it's not drastically different. I've attached a pic for reference.

The MPH is at 30mph (obscured by my hand).

The gas tank is totally full right now (second picture attached shows the cluster when the engine is running).

So what I'm wondering is whether this actually shows a bad cluster, and what it means if it doesn't.

(I know you may not know, but I'm hoping someone on the forums might.)

Thanks!

Josh

I think they're supposed to be even, so it might mean you have a bad cluster. You can probably buy a used one and then have it re-calibrated to your mileage.
