My first impressions of the G......

Well it's been about 2!/2 years since I first came across the 4 door sedan and I knew that was the car I wanted. Then the coupe came out then I knew that was the car I really wanted.

I got the car about 2 weeks ago but since I was away on a trip my wife was the first one to get put the first miles on it. I bought an Obsidian G, Auto (wife can't drive stick ), Nav and pretty much everything else loaded on it except the Sirius radio and the front lip.

My first impressions after doing some around town driving and a little freeway driving. Of course I haven't even really opened the manual and I'm just referring to it when I have to so I probably know about 2% of what it can do.

PRO's

The car looks d@mn good. All my co-workers, neighbors, friends and family can't get enough of it. But then I knew that!!

The rims (19" OEM's) are just as good as any aftermarket IMO, I have no desire at this moment to upgrade them.

The Nav is pretty d@mn cool. The ooohhh aaahhh factor that you get from people who just get in the car when it raises up is priceless. I'm starting to get a handle on some of the settings but it does the job it's supposed to so far. I've had it take me to some of my favorite stops and it does the job. I like having the map set on the 1/4 mile setting so you can see individual streets. I am learning so much about my local area that I never knew because I never went down certain streets.

I like the Homelink system. It's nothing major but it beats having to carry another garage remote on my keychain.

This is the nicest car I've ever had so my initial driving of it was kind of granma like. I probably drove the tester car at the dealership harder than my car but I'm gonna baby the G. At first it didn't seem like it had a lot of initial acceleration but that may be because of a light foot. My wife says it takes off with her. I love the handles, compared to my old 1990 Prelude I can take 90 degree turns at fairly high speeds and I don't feel any "tipping" at all. That's why I like it; I don't have to be the fastest car but I do want good handles on twisties. Today I tested out the acceleration on a highway merger and came away satisfied. There was some truck trying to squeeze me but I just pushed on the gas and he became an afterthought. Nice.

The new leather smell turns women on. I don't what it is but women love the smell of new leather. Weird.

The power seats are great along with the telescoping steering wheel. I think I have too much adjustments because I can't stop adjusting on the fly. It always seems like I can make it feel even better.

Everything just seems well made. The trunk closes with a nice thump, same with the car doors. I can't imagine anything coming loose anytime soon. Knock on wood.

The dual climate system is cool and I like the whole AC setup.

The brakes work well.

The trademark infiniti clock is the $#!t, I don't know how anyone cannot like that at nighttime.

CONS:

The thing I dislike the most about the G is getting into the backseat area. I don't know how or why they engineered to to have to push the button for it to travel forward but it gets annoying waiting for it come up all the way. And then having to move it all the way back. They need to come up with something better than that or at least speed it up.

The second worst thing I dislike is the MP3 player functions. This was one of the reasons I decided to get an '05 was the MP3 player. I mean it does the job and reads MP3's but it's so slow reading each track and going from one CD to another is even slower. Plus just reading the 1st 8 characters from the title or artist is lame. Why they couldn't have a head unit that doesn't scroll is beyond me. My 100 dollar MP3 player on my arm can scroll a premium sound system should be able to too. I also learned I don't like having 80 songs on 1 CD. I don't like the folder system either, this unit doesn't read the tracks fast enough to have that many songs IMO.

I don't really dig the steering wheel stitching. I don't know why but it doesn't do anything for me.

The trunk is just for show but then we all knew that.

I don't know what that cardholder thing is above the drivers side but it doesn't work for me. The one behind the passengers visor is much better.

The turning radius on the G sucks. I can make better u turns in my Honda Prelude and Jeep Liberty way better. That's going to take some getting used to.

I love the G. It's my new baby and I will never cheat on her...........

Nice write up. Although I don't really care about my back seat. Main point it has a back seat. That is why I am going G35 instead of 350Z. It may not be big but at least it has one.

Nice write up. Congrats on the purchase. With time all the small annoyances will be come to nuances and nothing more. The car is awesome, great choice.

About the back seat, I dont know why they changed it for 05 for it to be a button.. On my 04 you just pull the seat up, it moves up automatically and most people say "oh cool" and then push it back and it moves back automatically.

I cant say I disagree with the turning radius thing..

Isnt the prelude FWD?? But hey, to each his own. Congrats!

I actually think the backseat is pretty big, I'm 5'10 and I sat back there with the front seat all the way back no problems. In comparison to my Prelude it's massive, of course the trunk in my Prelude was much bigger.......

Nice review.

The cardholder you can swap out for another oh sh*it handle if you want. They're like ~$20 from your dealer and there's an DIY on how to replace it (very easy). This handle can help someone sitting behind you when getting out of the car.

Back seat is decent for leg room, awful for head room. Depending on where your height is on your body depends on how comfortable/uncomfortable it will be for you. If you've got long legs then it will be better for you.

As for u-turns, just turn the wheel all the way and floor it for a full second, the back fish-tails just enough and then you can catch it. Takes some practice, but it's not hard - plus it's fun. You'll learn to love & appreciate the weight balance on the car and realize that you don't need vdc.

My only suggestion would be to tint all the windows asap. If your not a huge tint fan you don't have to go super dark (although I think it looks great) - it does wonders for keeping your car cooler on hot days and will help the life of your leather.

oh & the dead cow smell doesn't do it for vegetarian girls.

Bad turning radius - turn the wheel all the way.
Don't like the steering wheel stitching - Really??? I think it's great.
No acceleration - what do you expect, you got an auto - for shame.

I've been driving for a while. I know how to turn a car. Compare the turning radius for the G to a Jeep Liberty the other car I own.

This is also a link to a comparison of the G to an Audi TT, BMW 3 series 325, Audi TT Quattro and Mercedes Benz CLK320 Coupe. The G comes in last by 2 inches. Do you think turning the wheel harder might compensate for that?

I said that it felt like it didn't have any INITIAL acceleration. I drove it on freeway last night and had no problem passing any car that I wanted to. Also if you read the review instead of skimming I said I was babying the car so I haven't done any street light racing. I haven't felt the need to jam my foot on the pedal off the line quite yet. So I don't feel any shame with the auto.

This is why we all have opinions and post reviews. I see you just focus on the negative.............

The lag in initial acceleration may be due in great part to the throttle-by-wire system. That was one of my biggest gripes about the 5AT. My other car uses throttle-by-cable and flies off the line like a rocket despite the 60 additional hp the G has on it. The G just comes to life in the higher rpm range.
