298 hp auto?

Any chance the 06 will have 298 hp for the auto as well as the 6MT? It would seem to be a reasonable change. Just curious. I am planning to order one by mid August.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 298 HP version of the engine is just different software that moves the power/torque band higher up in the RPM range. I don't think it would be a good thing for the 5AT since it spends more time in the lower RPMs (unless in manumatic mode). Remember, it isn't max HP that is important, but the area under the entire HP curve. On top of that, the 298 HP version has 10 less maximum torque... which to me proves that it is just a software difference moving the curves around.

This is true.

But even so, the 298hp 2005 models received slower 0-60 times than the 2003/04 models. Not anything major, but I remember seeing mid 5's for them, and with the 05 change they are all high 5's.

But it's always nice saying I have 298HP ... and with a Z-Tube, you can be like I have 300hp! (Crank )

This is partially true. In addition to the reprogrammed ECU (more aggressive - higher redline), there are hardware changes. New Cams, Exhaust valve timing, and a new lower plenum. Peak torque is less, peak horsepower higher. The new profiles for the new engine, IMO, really would not fit the characteristics of the 5AT. IOW, the car would be slower.

Thanks for the information. 300hp luxury sport coupe just sounded better than 280hp etc. Still love the car, it has beaten out the Acura TL, BMW 330i, Mustang GT, Pontiac GTO. In the end, I did not want a car that did some things well and others marginally. i wanted a car that does everything well and makes more sense as a package. That IS the G35 coupe. Thanks guys and I can't wait to join the ranks of owners here.

Personally, I would think a future G35 (don't know when), would probably do something to the engine, (perhaps bigger), to pump out closer to 330hp, like the concept from japan, which I think had a 3.8 litre VQ or maybe even 4 litre, I can't remember. I say this, because I don't think Infiniti will want the G35 to have less power than the Lexus IS350 for too long. (306hp)

To add to this, the 298hp version of the motor features variable valve timing on both the intake and the exhaust valves where as the 280hp has fixed valve timing on the exhaust and variable on intake. Not only is it different programming, but the mechanically the motors are slightly different. Mainly in the heads and piston valve reliefs.

I believe the intake plenum is different as well in the 6MT 05's. They redesigned the lower plenum for better airflow in all the cylinders.

Just mod your 05 and you can get about the same hp without comprimising low end torque. If you take away the low end torque on the AT you will see a deminishment in performance as the low end torque is needed to get the 5AT tranny moving effciently.
