Seriously, though - I had the 6MT, they are nice, and fun, but a "superior machine" they are not.

Listen folks, I am not ragging on the 6MT or trying to justify getting an At this time around. Had I wanted the MT again I'd have bought it. What i am saying is they are different, and neither is substantially better. The idea that the MT some how superior technology is kind of laughable.

An AT superstar, I like that... it takes a lot of skill to mash the gas pedal!

I think all us 6MT owners are saying is that statistically the 6MT is faster than the 5AT, period. That's not to say that everyone driving a 6MT will "smoke" a 5AT. Obviously it's dependent on how well the 6MT driver can shift.

In any case, 6MT owners bought their cars because they like shifting for themselves. I owned a 5AT sedan before my 6MT coupe and it's a completely different feel. The 6MT feels more connected and just plain funner to drive. I don't think I could ever go back to an AT, except maybe for an M45...

 

I agree, the 6MT is actually less sophisticated from a technological standpoint. But it is more fun to drive than the 5AT.

 

Oh great, another AT vs MT thread, we gotta have one of these every 3 months or so.

I say performance aside, automatic transmission is easier to live with on a day to day basis.........

6MT is how a sports car should be taken. It is what makes the difference between a go-cart and a car, a console game and a real car. You are more involved in what the car does when you have MT. Where is the fun in stepping on the gas and just steering? That IMO is just dumb. That doesnt make you a good driver, just a lazy one. The worst thing that I can possibly see... a Porsche (or any real performance sports car) with a dumb AT shifter.

 

AT owners can justify all they want. While the 5AT is a decent tranny, bottom line is that the 6MT makes for a faster car. At 60mph every 10th of a second is roughly 8.8 feet. So if a 6MT can get there .7 seconds faster then that car will be 61.6 feet ahead. That my freind is an @$$ whoopin.

The 5AT bogs off the start regardless is you power brake or not. it also doesn't have a gear around 30-40 MPH to downshift to when you need to make that jump out into traffic.

 

NO WAY that an MT has a .7 second advantage on the 0-60.

the 5AT has a better 1/4 mile time then the 6MT and that is all there is to it. So stop wining you MT drivers.

These never ending debates with the young MT drivers who think everyone who drives an AT is an abortion. Yer all the same trash talking bastards and we seen generation after generation of them on this board. Grow up and realize we all have different needs as buyers. If you think it's "stupid" to buy an AT then you'll be stupid when you're driving a 9 speed AT in a few years that offers control and the extra ratios for real acceleration prowess.

I can accept it if you can accept that your getting passed by the AT at the track 9 of 10 times and maybe even 10 of 10 unless all the crap talk actually translates into driving skill.
