6th Gear

Anyone ever wondered why the 5th gear is so short? I mean, for highway cruising, i would expect 6th gear going at 3,000 rpm to be faster than 120 kmph or 75 mph.

My WRX which had 5 gears did the same (3k rpm = 75 mph). Other cars I've noticed, can go 75mph at only 2,000rpm.

I take there's no easy way to change this? Just wondering 'cuz 90% of my driving is done on the highway.

Consider 5th and 6th as almost exclusively highway gears. 6th is for cruising while 5th is for accelerating/passing or driving with enthusiasm.

Yeah, I wish 6th was a little taller. My SS Camaro would do 80 mph under 2000 RPM. I hardly used 6th in that car, but I use 6th a lot in the G.

The G needs a taller 6th, or a 7th gear.

For the VQ35DE's engine size/power, it could easily provide the necessary pull to hold 2500 RPM's at 80 MPH.

Hell.. I can cruise easily at 40 MPH in 6th gear without bogging if I'm going a constant and consistent speed on a back road.

Yes I agree the car has enough torque to have a taller 6th gear. A change of about 10% would suit me fine.

75mph at only 2K rpm? Care to compare redlines then? Most Japanese engines are high rev (most). But my V6 4runner has an redline at like 5800, so it makes sense...can't compare the two.

My moms S430 barely see's over 2k RPMS.

I think its a V8 with 280/270torque

And you can definitely tell its geared for low RPMS... Its a really smooth ride.. you can barely feal the gears shift.

Unless you slam it into tiptronic lol

2500 rpm at 80 mph would be nice for both engine noise and fuel economy. Sometimes I don't bother downshifting to 5th to pass due to the car being at 3k rpm at 80 mph. Now if I really want to get in front of you, I'll do a 6 to 4 downshift at 80 mph and say bye bye.

I would like to see at least a 500 RPM drop in 6th. If I remember corectly, however, 5th gear is a 1:1 and 6th gear is 0.70:1 over drive.
