Go Nitrous like me and you will love your G. i JUST came back from running my friends Z06 once again......
And once again, he got walked on a 75 shot, otherwise stock G. Whole setup costs you around 1200 and youll take 99.9% out there on the road safely. Im going to take it to the track next week to see what ill run. Wish me luck

the G is as "fast" as anything else in the price range except the GTO.
that is, on open roads it should be able to keep up with STi, Evo, etc.
It handles as well as most other cars also, including the M3.
As far as features go, it has as many as any others in the price range except maybe the IS.
As far as refinement goes, again its up to spec against all but the IS and E90 imo.
So I'd say overall it does many things well, but no, it doesn't really excel in one particular aspect except maybe looks. To say the G is slow is taking it to the extreme IMO, unless you're comparing it to Carrera GTs and the like.
In any case, perhaps FI is the anser or maybe another car altogether..

Hump,
A lot of these guys are sensitive and its understandable.
But as much as I love my car, I too feel a bit unimpressed with the lag through the rpms, just like you.
Heres the solution bro.
Go out and buy an underdrive pully.
I have a few friends who all felt the same way and have replaced the stock pulley and holy **** what a difference!
I am about to order mine from Unorthadox Racing.
Its far and away the best bang for the buck performance mod you can get and the exact cure for what ails you.
A little over $200.00 and you will loving that G again.

Lets compare apples to apples. You said a modded engine, well I think that's the whole point. I'm from an 02 Altima with the VQ in it. If you guys know about this motor in our Altima's, they're de-balled if you know what I mean. Some say it was done by Nissan on purpose.
But I know that after I put an Intake, Headers, custom Borla exhaust...... it was a new animal. After my clutch went I put a JWT clutch and flywheel in and..... wow!
Even better. I know my Alti could take my G out of the box but at the top end????? My point is that the VQ had a breathing problem for us, open it up and it was a lot better!!! From what I have read so far being here for about a month, it sounds like this is true also. I have had my 06MT for about a month and love it to death, but yeah the mod bug bites!!! "I feel a need for speed".
Where are you goose? LOL As far as someone's commet about humping the car............... don't do this!!!! It hurts!!

im really thinking about F/I but along with that comes reliability issues i may just build another motor and throw it back in the mr2 and just keep it instead of selling just the shell.

It starts to pick up after 1200 and increases up through 3000 miles or so.
Change all of your drive trane fluids at 1200 and you will notice some extra pep.

When I drive the **** out of this car it feels just about as fast as advertised, but I thought it was going to be a lot quicker in typical daily driving without having to resort to winding the hell out of the motor.
My assessment of the engine is completely opposite. The torque curve is flatter than most. that is part of the reason why it "feels" sluggish. It simply pulls about the same throughout the RPM range and there is no peaky boost that compromises low-end. (Or maybe that's the way the 05 plus models feel?)
KAHBOOM hit the nail on the head. "Is" fast and "feels" fast are two different things. A car with a flat and big torque curve isn't going to feel terribly fast. I use to have a modded 94 Z28 with the LT1. When the more powerful LS1 F-Body came out it felt ***** slow compared to my 94 Z28. The reality was the LS1 was MUCH quicker and faster even though it didn't feel like it. A car with short and choppy torque curve is going to feel fast becasue power is weak and then it comes on with a fury. Your modded turbo MR2 probably suffered from fairly decent turbo lag therefore it's going maybe feel a lot faster. Also, the MR2 60 foots like no other therefore it can really haul off the line and give a huge sensation of speed since most acceleration Gs are generated in the first 40mph of a race.
For guys that think the G35 is some weak *** sport-luxury car, consider the fact that it outbraked, out accelerated, out handled, and unseated the comparably equipped BMW 330 from 2003 to 2004.
The G35 is not a Corvette, Viper, STI, EVO, etc. People need to understand this. It's just an entry level sport-luxury sedan with a good engine and solid chassis. It's not going to run sub mid 13s or pull 1g on the skidpad. Sure it has it quirks, but every car does. BMW, Audi, Benz, Lexus, etc. I'm amazed people somehow think this car is suppose to do much.

+1 on the "feels" vs. "Is". Its funny how everyone wants a flat torque curve, but then complaint about how makes the car feel "sluggish". The first time I opened up my FJR1300 I thought, well this isnt as fast as everybody says. Then I looked down at the speedo saying 130 MPH. Elapsed time... about 10 seconds. But it didnt "feel" that fast because no peak, just a stable pull all the way up.
Of course, a stock G isnt going to have the same wow factor as a turbo car. Totally different animal. Silly to even compare the 2.

The car may seem that way when you first get it. Just wait til the engine breaks in a little more. Thats what i thought when i went from my 04 to my 05 6mt coupe but now, this car is definitely faster. My 04 was a little more torquey though
You guys are right about the flat torque curve.
Every single stock dyno sheet I have seen on the G35 has suggested the same...a flat torque curve up until about 6k RPM's, then it drops off and the horsepower takes off.

I felt the same way when my car was stock, like it felt anemic at wot. A few friends who drove it said the same. After intake, headers, exhaust and a new crank pulley my car pulls a lot harder in the upper rpms and has a deeper more aggressive sound. I love it.
Torque is without question a contributing factor in the G's disappointing acceleration, but the real problem is that the G is heavy. A 997 Porsche only has about 20 more HP than a G coupe, and the 997 is far from a torque monster like a C6, but take a ride in a 997. It feels like it has at least a 100 more HP than a G. And the reason is weight. The 997 is several hundred lbs lighter than the G.
