New transmission after 15 months!
I just found out I need a new transmission. Was hearing a whistling noise when the car was cold; thought for a while my drive belts were bad.
This is 6MT 05 with 31 K miles, bought it 9/06.
Can I ask Infiniti to buy it back or give me Blue book credit to buy the 07?

What other symptoms you have besides noise?

The most common reason for a new tranny on the VQ is bad synchros which cause gear grinding. You will not get any money back but they will fix it. I'm on #2 and have seen quite a few people who are on #4 or higher. There are threads on here and my350z about it. The one on my350 is like 30+ pages.

i'm assuming they leave the clutch alone? and just repair issues with the syncros and gears?

Crappy,
I just bought mine 3 months ago. It has 8000 km on it and it makes an annoying whistle under acceleration. Plus when i drive on the highway for prolonged periods it has that distinct hot metal smell, kinda like buring your clutch - does this mean i can expect a warranty tranny placement soon
This is unfortunate, my last car was a stealth rt turbo and it was infamous for blowing its synchros in the getrag unit. It cost me $5k when it did.

I'm experiencing the same whistling sound from my 2005 6mt when the car is cold. I'm wondering how the whistling is related to the transmission? I've owned many manual tranmission cars and this is my first whistler.
The thread rekindled my memory of another Nissan transmission episode. I bought a Datsun 2000 new back in 1969. At approximately 25 thousand miles / 25 months the fifth gear "went" without any warning. It was such a noisy contraption its unlikely any warning would have been audible. I was without the use of the car for 3 months and relieved of $400 after it was finally repaired. $400 was a princely sum for a college student, so it was a sobering welcome to the world of sports cars. They didn't have loaner cars back then either, so I was hoofin it for awhile.
Datsun was kind enough to send me a letter explaining that the failure was not covered because the failure occurred beyond the warranty period.

They replace the entire tranny. Sometimes they also give you a new clutch and TOB. I have even seen a few people get a new flywheel. Most of the time it's just the tranny. They put in my UR flywheel and JWT clutch when they replaced mine.
