ECU reset and Smoke!

I did the ECU reset via stepping on the gas and all the other procedures described on this site. Check light blinked and all good to go.. Shifts felt different couldn't tell if it was faster but It felt more aggressive. Then I floored it later that night and my engine started smoking?! I couldn't locate the source but it was odd! I haven't floored it since. But it has stopped smoking. What everyones opinion?

Okay, I plead being dumb here, but what is ECU? I keep seeing threads about it and have been wanting to ask!

Engine Control Unit (I think). It's the computer that runs your engine, controlling the ignition timing, fuel delivery, emissions, etc.

Okay, thanks, that makes sense now! I dunno why I couldn't figure that out! Why is that so easy to reset? Seems like it would be easy for someone with no knowledge to screw it up!

Re: ECU reset and Smoke!

I'm guessing black smoke...so you are running a little rich I would assume...just some unburnt fuel. Most cars from the factory run a little rich, the ECU reset no doubt exacerbating this for a short while.

It shouldn't cause any damage - all it should do is restore default settings and remove all knowledge that the ECU accumulated/learnt from your driving style, etc.

I guess that makes sense, there is most likely no way to screw it up!

Re: ECU reset and Smoke!

ABQ_G35, here's a link to our ECU reset procedures in our DIY forum.
If you've not done it b4, give it a try and then post with your impressions. It may have quite an effect.
Let me know if I can help.
