Bad Gas Mileage? More Info...

OK, so we've all seen the threads where people whine about their bad gas mileage. The response is often - "If you want good mileage - get a VolksWagon". Well I normally get 450 to 480 Km per tank and up to 530 Km if it's highway only. For the last 3 tanks I have been lucky to crack 400. The first tank, I figured I was just having too much fun, but after three, I realized something was up. So last weekend, I remove my CAI filter and do the cleaning routine on it. (Cleaned it out with the special cleaner, rinsed it, dried it, oiled it and reinstalled.)

Now my tank is still one quarter full and I'm already at 400 Km. I will easily get 470 km out of this tank and it was only three quarters full when I did the air cleaner service.

So, the moral of the story is - if your mileage sucks - check your air filter!

Thanks for the hint. How often do you change your air filter? How long or how many miles has it been since you've had the filter?

I think AEM recommends a clean every 30,000 miles, but after this, I think I'm going to be in there every 10,000 or 6 months.

I'm lucky if I can get 420km city in the winter. My filter is OEM and I replaced it 2 months ago. My MAF and throttle body was recently cleaned as well.

I'm thinking a good bottle of BG 44k might do the trick.

I just picked up my 03.5 sedan and was a bit worried about this gas mileage thing. So far I've been averaging just over 500 kms per tank city driving. Thanks for the heads up though!

For whatever reasons, these cars are known for very poor gas mileage, considering a 3.5L displacement. I understand that the X will be the worst, given it's AWD and auto. But I could not get more than about 18 average. As a comparison, my wife's Honda Odyssey with close to the same hp and heavier, gets low to mid 20's. My Charger SRT8, with significantly higher hp and 6.1L, is in the 20's if I'm not having too much fun with it .

And my air cleaner is always clean.....

Yeouch - that's considerably less than the advertised mileage from the manufacturer. Specs say you should get 12.8 Ltrs/100 km city. I'm getting a little better than that with my mods when I don't have too much fun. I'm not sure it's fair to compare the G to other cars, but things should be a little more consistent between Gs (specially same frame and year).

Have you changed your plugs yet? (I did mine last fall)
