Caught up with the folks at Stillen yesterday and got the following responses. Probably could get better info from the engineers themselves, but they don't exactly post those guys' numbers on the website. Take a read...

I understand. I think either filter is an excellent choice. We chose to use K&N in all of our intakes because of the superior quality and their name. Our customers are very comfortable that we use genuine K&N filters. It is ultimately up to you on what brand of filter you use. Unfortunately, I do not have the dimensions or part # for the filter.

Best Regards,
Margaret Lo

Margaret,

Thanks for the speedy response. The K&N filters supposedly allow a lot more dust/dirt particles through than the new nanofiber filters from Amsoil. Amsoil claims that their nanofiber design removes 50 times more dust and stores 15 times more contaminants than K&N’s wet gauze design while allowing equivalent or better airflow. Their pricing is the same or cheaper than K&N, and the filter is guaranteed for 4 years / 100,000 miles. Plus Amsoil’s filter is a dry filter so you don’t need to wash and oil them at all – you simply use shop air or a vacuum cleaner to remove the dirt build-up

Link to Amsoil production information: https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eaa.aspx

Several people I know use Amsoil’s panel filter for the standard airbox on the G35 and really like it, so I was trying to attempt the same thing for the cone filter that comes with your product. Let me know what you think, and thanks again for the response.

Thanks

Thank you for your inquiry!
Unfortunately, I do not have a part # as it is a specially made filter for Stillen by K&N. I do not have the measurements.

The K&N filter is a great filter! Can I ask why you want to change to the Amsoil nanofiber filter?

Best regards,
margaret lo

Subject: Stillen HFA (Part #402835) Filter Size

Hello,

I’m considering buying Stillen’s High Flow Airbox for my 2003 Infiniti G35 Coupe but I’m thinking of swapping Stillen’s (K&N?) filter for an Amsoil nanofiber filter after the purchase. I’m trying to find the Amsoil cross-over part but I can’t find the part number for the standard filter shipped with the Stillen intake. Do you have the K&N part number and/or the complete filter measurements? Either one would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and look forward to doing business with you.

Bottom line is that the Stillen intake uses a proprietary filter size that they order directly from K&N, so there probably isn't a direct cross-over.

I'm an avid AmsOil motor oil user and would entertain the idea of using their air filter... however, I don’t think it could possibly be so much better than the K&N to warrant all the fuss trying to cross-reference.

Many G and Z owners (including myself) have been using K&N for a long time without any problems - why so adamant about using AmsOil with the Stillen CAI?

If it was as easy swap I might consider - but as it stands it's not worth it... I'll stick to the K&N that came with my CAI.

There's nothing particularly "propietary" about their filter. They have been using the same filter at LEAST since they offered one for the 1989 maxima.

Well the deal is, the Amsoil is SUPPOSED to filter much better w/o any flow restrictions. And it's easier to take care of. (ie..no oiling).

This I understand... but I don’t know that it's worth all the fuss... Let's face it, the K&N works well and you rarely need to clean/oil it - it's not like it's a huge burden or anything.

Again, I'm a big fan of AmsOil - and would consider using it (for the reason you've mentioned)... but I wouldn’t go so far out of my way for it.

I've seen tests that might show the K&N not filtering as well as it should be. The same test also showed the APEXI type dry filter to be very well flowing and filtering. But the Apexi unit you throw away. So I'm not sure it's the same type as this Amsoil/AEM type dry filters.

Maybe, I meant it more along the lines of that you can't buy it directly from K&N or an authorized reseller other than Stillen. Maybe that just makes them a sole-source distributor of a specialty K&N product.

Definitely coming to that conclusion too. I'm think I'm either going to just get the Stillen CAI and keep it standard or just throw in a panel filter. Of course there's a $200+ difference between the two, so you can probably guess which way I'm leaning now...

Naw. If you dig around K&N's site, I'm sure you can match the dimensions and buy the filter. The velocity stack on the other hand.... Only Stillen and JWT seem to offer these.
