break-in
Re: break-in
Congratulations on your purchase. In the manual it probably says to take it easy for the first 1200 miles, easy meaning try not to take it above 4k rpm. My dealer told me 500 miles was ok and if you search the board you will see others debate rather or not it is even necessary to break it in at all. I ended up doing the 1200 mile break-in just to be on the safe side.

Re: break-in
Run for cover! This topic has been highly debated. There is a thread somewhere regarding this. The owner's manual says the first 1200 miles. My sales rep told me the keep it under 4k rpm for the first 1200 and no cruise control for the first 600.
Re: break-in
IMO, if they are warrantying the car, I follow thier break-in recommendations! I have always taken it easy on my new cars for at leat 1k, only ever had one that wound up using oil later on!

Re: break-in
Agree break-in. My 04 sedan now has 1430 mi and I did baby the car until 1240-50 mi. Now, I drive it hard responsibly going over 4000RPM and never redline it until probably 2000-2100 miles. Then Im all for it when I need it only.

Re: break-in
I agree with ekaz. Do a search and see the various opinions. I was told by someone to run easy for the first 500mi. Then, open up to 6000rpm in 2nd gear to 'seal' something (i'm not an engine expert). There is also a post that says to run it high as soon as you get it to seal these gaskets or something.

Re: break-in
I also agree wiith ekaz. I'm following the 1200 mile rule with my X, almost half way there. Can't wait! I've hit 4k a couple of times but no biggy. My previous car experience is that if you follow the manufacturers recs and change oil often, you'll never have a car that drinks oil. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Lucky for me we got a lot of snow during the time I was trying to break-in my car. No desire to let it rip when the roads are covered with snow.

Re: break-in
I couldn't resist the urge. I reved her upto redline after about 300 miles. Only did it for a few times though. Have been driving her below 4K rpm since that day.
IF you drive it like you stole it from day one then you might run into a problem later on down the line, however this is just a speculation. But if you break her in a little like 300 miles or so then revving her to redlines a few times until 1200 miles or so you will be fine.
