Clunking sound front end (not squeeking!)

Hi there
I was looking for some advice here. I took my 03 to the dealership because there was a clunking noise in the front end when I go over bumps. They thought it might be the control arm but when they were checking it out they saw that a wheel bearing bolt was loose. They tightened up and told me it should do the trick. It didn't fix it up and now I will have to take it back. They are not positive that it is the control arm but to replace it will be $545 parts and labour.
Has anyone had this problem.
Thanks in advance
Matt

the last time i heard a CLUNKING sound from front end it was a loose sway bar bolt. try pushing down on the front fenders to see if you can replicate the sound.

Do a search on this forum for "Compression Rod". I'm about 95% sure this is the problem your are describing. The compression rod bushings actually fail (crack), and cause a very noticeable clunking/creaking/clanking most noticeable at low speeds going over small bumps, undulations.

I know about the compression rod issue because I do sometimes hear the squeeking that everone is talking about. I hear it when I pull into my driveway and drive over the water gulley.
This is definately different, it clunks when I go over potholes or bumps in the road and it sounds like a clunk or rattle.
Drives me freaking crazy, it sounds like I am driving an old Caprice taxi or something that clunks as you drive down the street.
I will mention the above named things to my dealrship and see if we can get to the bottom of it
Thanks
Matt

I had the same issue man, it's a blown strut. That is what I thought mine was in the first place but they did the same thing they are doing with yours (tighten alll the bolts, replace wheel bearings, tie rod ends etc.). They replaced the strut, BINGO!

Thanks for the input guys, i will tell them to check for a blown strut.
It's frustrating when you pay all of this money for them to diagnose and the noise is still there
Have a good weekend
Matt
