Running on Fumes...

I saw the fuel light on and I know there's at least 3.5 gallons in the tank once that happens. At 17.5 MPG, I estimate another 60 miles or so left before I'm drained. Ran another 45 miles or so before getting to work on Friday. Heading out to lunch, the G was hesitant to start, had to bump the ignition 3 times to get the engine running. Stopped across the street to fill up and got 19.6 gallons... 1 click after the pump's auto shut off. Got 338 miles on that tank, that's 17.25MPG, 70% city.

Not a great story.. just a confirmation that the G has a 20 gallon tank... and that my G CHUGS fuel. Don't know how these other board members get the mileage they claim....

that city driving is probably why. i have 20-22mpg with 50/50 driving. 25mpg with 99% highway.

highest fillup i ever cared to go for was 18 gallons. I always thought there were only 2 gallons in there after the light comes on.

When my G was new, up until I had 36K on the odo, my commute was 95% highway at 80mph and I still only got 22.5 MPG on my BEST day. Go figure... it is what it is. I get 17/22 city/highway... when new and at 94K.

I'm with you on that, but I get even less MPG. How about 9 in the city and about 18 on the highway on average. Horrible!

I agree with you. I've seen some rediculous claims of fuel consumption here make me want to throw out the B.S flag

running the car out of gas like that can seriously mess up the fuel pump

Well no ****, going 80mph on average is going to *severely* decrease your average mpg. If you want to get anywhere near the advertised highway mpg, you need to cruise around 55-60 mph. I average ~20 mpg in 50/50 driving, but I can easily get 25-26 mpg on the freeway at a moderate speed.

lol at 9mpg in the city, talk about racing to the next street light.

and the advertised 25-26 highway mpg is at 60mph. so obviously the faster you go the less mpg you'll get

Driving habits are the biggest factor.

Go on the prius/hybrid sites, and pick up some of the basic hypermiling techniques, and you'll pick up 25-40% MPG pretty easily without any real effort on your part.

I figure I can pretty safely do 50 miles (with about a 20 mile buffer) once my light goes on. So I hit a trip and find a station at about 50 miles.

This was midgrade... 89.

My wife's Sequioa gets 16.5 MPG with that 4.7L V8. Just doesn't seem fair. Looks like Nissan creates HP by shoving lots of gas and air in those combustion chambers.

That's not true anymore. The fuel pump sucks gas from the bottom of the tank so any sediment has already been picked up, doesn't matter if your tank is full or near-empty.

My 02 Acura TL gave me 26MPG cruising 80MPH doing the same commute of 95% highway driving. Like I said above... just doesn't seem fair.

But... there's nothing like a good stomp on the accelerator (especially on an exit ramp) to remind me why I love my G! It's worth a small dent in fuel consumption.

actually, you're wrong....... it's not about 'sediment'...
"the fuel up is located inside the gas tank to help "muffle the buzzing noise produced by the electric pump motor, and immersing the pump in fuel helps lubricate and cool the pump motor.

"Driving with the fuel tank less than one-quarter full, can shorten pump life by causing it to run hot. It also increases the risk of momentarily starving the pump for fuel when cornering sharply, braking or accelerating.

"Running out of gas can sometimes damage an electric fuel pump by starving it for cooling and lubrication."
"
