Re: Switching to regular

prices went down a little here in indy to $2.19 for premium (shell or bp). and wow, we don't even have full serve, not that i want an attendant touching my car. but, anyway, i'm expecting the prices to jump when the indy 500 and F1 come around.

Re: Switching to regular

Just imagine that you were successful in wounding the oil
companies. Suppose you hurt them so bad that they would
not be able to supply your local gas stations with any fuel.
Isn't that like shooting yourself in the foot or pissing directly
into a high wind?

Re: Switching to regular

I know every little bit helps BUT...assuming that 87 octane is ten cents less/gal. than 93 (like it is everywhere here in Austin) and the average fill up is around 17 gallons...that is only $1.70. saved. I am going to do a test and run with 87 but if I notice even the littlest bit of change it's back to 93!

Re: Switching to regular

I ran 1/2 a tank of medium octane and noticed no difference at
all. But since I still can afford the Super grade, I still use it.

If there were only 10 cents a Lb. difference between steak and hamburger - would you eat the burger?

Re: Switching to regular

you know what i think....if we use regular..thats about 20 cents cheaper per gallon...thats about...3 dollars we save every fill up's....thats like..20 bucks a month....240 dollars a year.....yes...maybe its not good for the engine...but it probably not gonna break down in a year ...especially when you have warranty...at the end...even if you have to fix your car in like..6 years...doesn't that still save you money...not to mention even if you use premium gas...you probably still ahve to maintain your car somehow? ...just a thought....

Re: Switching to regular

If you want to do the math, you should also consider that you get reduced fuel economy with regular. Let's say you drive 15,000 miles per year and average 18mpg. That's 833.3 gallons of gas. Now you switch to 87 and get 17.5mpg (just to pull a number at random). That's 857.1 gallons. 23.8 gallons more. Now, let's take a number somewhere in the middle between SoCal and the East Coast, and say $2.00 for 87 and $2.20 for premium (91, 93, I don't care).

833.3 * 2.20 = $1832.82
857.1 * 2.00 = $1714.20

A difference of less than $120 a year, about half of your estimate.

It varies depending on how much you drive a year, how much gas costs in your area, and how much of an impact on fuel efficiency the 87 has on your car and driving style. You'll have to run your own numbers. In some cases the 87 may actually be more expensive at the end of the year.

I've been running 87 for several months now, as an experiment to see how it affects the car. It's hard to tell if there's much of an effect on mileage on my car, though, as this beast varies up and down from 15 to 18mpg all the time, anyway.

Re: Switching to regular

ya...i was thinking that...but no one ever can prove how much (or if any) difference in gas milage between different octane's......so...i didn't put that in consideration...even 120 bucks a year can mean something...

Re: Switching to regular

If anyone can find out the Compression Ratio of the G35s engines that way you can see the difference with a regular engine which typically uses 8 to 1 ratio. As you go higher than 8, you will need a higher octane that can handle the compression effect better.

I checked infiniti.com, manual and brochure but couldn't find the compression ratio.

I think it's safter to fill up with premium, if you plan to keep the car for a while. If it's a lease, save your money and pump regular.

Someone saif the ECU would lock in to the regular setting after a while, where did you get this from?! Everytime you turn on your engine it's a brand new day for the knock sensors! The instant the lower or higher octane gas reaches the sensors they will adjust the timing seamlessly.

Re: Switching to regular

Pull up Infiniti's website, click on G35 Sedan (or Coupe), then click on Specifications.

Mechanical

Compression Ratio 10.3:1

Re: Switching to regular

aww :-) I was on Infiniti Canada's site. Well then, I think it's pretty clear that using the 91 is wiser if you care to keep your car running smooth.
