I always thought this was funny when this phrase was originally coined during some commercial for Nike (I think it was Nike). Funny then because it as a misquote, and funny now because it's become more famous than the real original quote, and in many ways conveys the exact opposite meaning of the original. It was Henry "Red" Sanders who said "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing". Vince Lombardi later said "Winning isn't everything, the will to win is the only thing." Red Sanders won the NCAA football championship in 1954 and Vince Lombardi won the first 2 Super Bowls.
