VDC & Tire Size Question

I need VDC expertise. I am looking to get a set of Drag Radials. My two options are using the OEM Infiniti 17x7 rims that my wife has been using to put off getting new tires for her 02 Maxima, or getting a set of light weight racing rims with 16" tires. The cheapest way out would be to just get tires for the oem rims, but then I am thinking I am leaving time on the track by not getting the lighter and shorter 16' rim and tire combo that has proven to be best at the track.

My next question is if I go the 16" rim my sizes are limited to two tires...the Nitto 555 R 245/50 16s or the BFG (old style) Comp TA DR 255/50 16s...compared to my Blizzaks on Fox 5 Rims that measure 215/55 16s. Will this screw up my VDC b/c of the difference in overall tire heights. I remember someone saying something about that last year, but there was never any concrete evidence and as so many threads do...it went no where in the end. I found the formula on line to convert the metric sizing into an over all height and the break down is this:

215/55 16 = 25.22"
245/50 16 = 25.55" for a .33 or 1/3 of an inch of difference...not much I would think.
255/50 16 = 25.94" for a .72 or 3/4 of an inch of difference which still doesn't seem like much, although it is more.

I need to get these tires asap so please let me know what you VDC experts think. Thanks so much.

Re: VDC & Tire Size Question

Not really an expert but I recall something along the lines of staying within 3% of original tire size.

Re: VDC & Tire Size Question

Are you saying that as long as the rears are within 3% of the front size I am ok, or are you saying as long as all 4 tires are within 3% of the OEM tires I am ok?'

Thanks for at least trying!

Re: VDC & Tire Size Question

Will you be swapping tires at the track or do you plan on driving on the drag radials all the time? I just want to mention that these tires need a very good burnout to work well and in order to do so you will need to pull the VDC fuse. Therefore I don't think you should have a problem with different tire diameters at the track. Also, you do have one more choice in tires from Mickey Thompson. They just released a street drag radial that's gotten some good reviews. Check it out here!

Re: VDC & Tire Size Question

Bobby,

Thanks so much. I looked at the MTs, but there the same size as the BFGs which is a hair too tall compared to the Nittos so I went ahead and just ordered those.

I plan on driving around on my Kuhmos, but when I go to the track I will switch them all off and put the 215/55 16 Blizzaks up front for light weight and narror shape through the air and then the Nittos out back.

I have also heard from many people at the track the last time I was up there that the Nittos, unlike the BFG drag radials, do require a good burnout and this made me nervous b/c I know the Automatics are a PITA to get that to happen with at the track...I have a VDC over ride switch my buddy and I enabled that if you put it in drive and hit the brakes the dash lights up and shows the ABS warning screen on the NAV...but I am hoping your way is better.

Where is the VDC fuse and are there any ramifications to pulling it and replacing it..IE, is the ECU cool with it?

Thanks so much. I was beginning to thing no one would have any help.

Re: VDC & Tire Size Question

bosssho,

The VDC fuse I mentioned is located by the battery. You need to pull the battery tray and you will discover a fuse block next to it. I believe by removing this fuse your ABS, rear brake lights and traction control will be dissabled. Warning lights will appear on the dash, but no harm should be done.
On the other hand you could install a line lock like this one available from Summit or other speed merchants. Simply splice into your front brake line and the solenoid will hold pressure to your front brakes only, enabeling you to perform proper burnouts without wear to your rear brakes. The part is about $80 and shouldn't take more than about 1 hour to install by a reputable shop. As you know the Nittos require a healthy burnout to perform best and without a line lock it will be difficult.
