Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep
Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep
I hope no one minds that this is a double post. I also posted this in the "modification" forum but haven't gotten many responses.
This isn't a real big deal, but it is somewhat of a pet peeve. Before I bought my Infiniti I had a Toyota. For obvious reasons the Infiniti blows away the Toyota in every respect except in one minor area. When I hit "lock" or "unlock" from the keyless entry pad the Toyota made a cool electronic beep sound and the lights lit either once or twice. When I test drove the TL I noticed it also had a cool electronic beep just a few octaves lower than the Toyota, When I hit "lock" from the G's keypad the horn beeps. This seems a rather lazy, low-tech way of identifying the car is locked. Now, I know I can turn off the sound, but I like a sound, just not this cheap horn beeping sound. So, is there a way of changing from a horn beep to an electronic beep. Please don't flame this post. I know it's not a big deal, but I thought I'd ask.

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep
Hey photodad, my girlfriend has a toyota and I like it but the electronic beeps her car makes drives me nuts. I am not just pumping up the G but saying how crazy all those beeps sound.

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep
best thing i can suggest is to get the nissan 350Z sport horns.. they sound very good (not cheap and tinny, but rather more fitting for a car of this satture..)
i think the oem horns sound like an oldsmobile lol the sporthorns are much less obnoxious when they sound for the split second...

Hey, now don't knock the horn on a G, maybe you don't remember those annoying cheap sounding horns Nissan use to have on the old Datsuns, geez!

lol
not knockin them, but (IMO) the oem horn just dont seem to 'fit' the size of the G.... they seem somewhat okay for the Q or M (maybe fx too) but not a smaller sporty car as the G is.....
and yes, i too remember the horns of the early-mid eighties.... embarassing, to say the least...lol

LOL, yeah real embarassing. I had a '73 Datsun PU(ke) that I hated to hit the horn! IMO, the horn gives this car more class!

I know what you're saying, sometimes you wanna creep into the house late at night and will hit the lock button by mistake instead of using the key to lock the doors...

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep
fotodad...
I think I have a (partial) solution.
Buy the electronic device of your choice (wrecked Toyota).
Tap into the wire that powers the unlock solonoid (investigation req'd).
Change your lock/unlock mode to one of the no horn modes.
When the solonoid is energized to lock the door, it will also chirp the electronic device.
There are actually 6 configuation modes available, as follows;
1. Lock = 1H & 2L; Unlock = ~H & 1L
2. Lock = ~H & 2L; Unlock = ~H & ~L
3. Lock = ~H & ~L; Unlock = ~H & ~L
4. Lock = ~H & 2L; Unlock = ~H & 1L
5. Lock = 1H & 2L; Unlock = ~H & ~L
6. Lock = 1H & ~L; Unlock = ~H & 1L
You will have to choose modes 2,3 or 4
We can switch between 1 & 2 with the key fob. The others require a code programmer (dealer)
------------------------------------------
[edit]
Depending on the power required for the additional device, you may have to use an interposing relay so that you don't overload the locking cct.

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep
inTrg8r,
Great idea. I'm sure finding a wrecked Toyota won't be difficult. But I can barely start a car without using the owner's manual, so I doubt I'd be able to do the hook-up you describe. Are you going to give it a try?

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep
I probably will.... just not sure when.
I have a couple of other mods that I'm in the middle of.
If I get some time I may research the connection points.
I'll send you a PM when I do.
