Moving Gear Lever?

For those with 6MT, I have to know: When you gas on and off in, say, 3rd gear, does your shift lever move slightly? Mine does it all the time and I'm trying to decide whether I need to get it looked at in case I have broken or loose engine / tranny mounts or if this is just par for the course in this car. It seems to move forward and backward vs side-to-side, which, given the setup of the engine and tranny, seems backwards to me. I'm worried I have bad mounts like I had in a previous car. If that's the case, getting the dealership to change them under warranty is going to be tough unless they're completely fuxx0rd.

Anyone?

Re: Moving Gear Lever?

yes it does move, slightly (less than 1/2 inch). This is normal in the MT cars I have driven before.

Re: Moving Gear Lever?

I've only ever owned manual transmission cars and other than when they have engine mount issues I've not witnessed it as much as this car has. What's the setup of this shifter with regards to it's relationship with the selector shaft on the transmission? Is it a cable system, or rods? what is it? does anyone have some sort of diagram?

Re: Moving Gear Lever?

It's not a cable, hence the vibration in the **** all the time. Mine moves like you describe, so I'd think it's normal. You can't exactly yank it out of gear very easily with the clutch engaged, w/out giving it a little gas, so I wouldn't worry about it accidentally getting out of gear on you.

Mine does the same thing....
It's funny my other 2 cars (mine & wife's car), Civic and VW Cabrio don't do that..
But I've driven others recent years stick shift cars and they do move like you describe.

Re: Moving Gear Lever?

this cars gear shift is coupled directly to the transmission thru the gear box. in a fwd car it is connected to the tranny by a cable or linkage or sometimes electronically. there is enough slack in the cable and linkage to reduce the vibration more than in this car
