Everybody that switched to Mobile 1 synthetic
Re: Everybody that switched to Mobile 1 synthetic
karlhungus- Do you always fill up at 3500 miles? I noticed oil was burned when I changed the oil @3100mi. I think it was at least 1/2 qt.!! Is this normal??
I don't like how our cars drink up synthetic! I always thought with synthetic you could change your oil at 4 - 5k intervals! How many miles do you guys change your oil??
For my sister's Mazda 3, the "Factory recommends" changing oil @ 5k intervals with dino oil...which is weird.

Re: Everybody that switched to Mobile 1 synthetic
I've used Mobil1 since 2K miles, now have 33K miles. I change every 5K and NEVER needed to add oil. In fact, the level indicated on the dipstick does not change at all, much as I can tell.

Mobil 1 5w-30 from 7000 miles to 33k miles, Mobil1 10w-30 since (now at 41k miles), no oil used or burnt and the engine sees redline daily. also have 40k miles on a previous VQ35DE engine with no oil usage running Mobil 1 5w-30 and 10w-30.
for all of you who think you may be burning oil, do you fill it to the line after an oil change? if so, that is too high. the line is "hot" level. following an oil change or other times when the oil is cold, the level should be at the 1/2-3/4 mark. then when you turn the car on and heat it up the level will expand to the full mark
this is why nissan recommends checking the oil hot at 10 minutes following shutdown. this ensures the oil is still hot but all the oil has drained back to the sump.
if you fill it too high the oil will foam and get carried over with the air to the PCV system to your intake tube and into your throttle body. This is not necessarily bad if it is only 1/4-1/2 quart high, just wasteful and inhibits efficient combustion.

I don't mean to Hi-jack the thread, but.....
Those that are not losing oil; How did you break your car in?
I broke mine in hard (not abusive) & use no oil at all.
IJMO but I think this seats the rings better.

Re: Everybody that switched to Mobile 1 synthetic
I did 700 miles the first day following the break in procedure. after that I "drove it like I stole it". I had a 8000+ rpm misshift (5th to 2nd instead of 4th) at about 1500 miles. I changed my oil immediately after that, then again at 3750.

Re: Everybody that switched to Mobile 1 synthetic
My car was broken in hard. Mine had 300-400 miles on it when I got it. All from test drives. So I am sure it wasn't treated nicely. And I was easy on it till 1000 miles, then I started getting on it really hard, but I did run it at the track with 800 miles. So like I said, it had a hard break in.

Re: Everybody that switched to Mobile 1 synthetic
Mobil 1 [all the various iterations] since 1991 [90Q] currently 268,000 miles changed every ~~4,000 miles.....never more than the rare 5,000 interval...............my records show 67 oil/filter changes.
402 quarts and never added anything between changes.
Overkill surely but whats $2,000 worth of oil [a $1200 increment over the $2 a quart stuff] [compared to $23,000 in gasoline] in 14 years.
Still doesn't burn a quart between changes!
But the ring cylinder wall design of the 90 Q was quite robust.
