Re: G35s vs. 330i
I feel compelled to stop the myth that BMW underrates their horsepower figures.
Here's one <a href="http://eurotuner.com/howto/99818/">thread</a>:
Stock, the 2001 330ci put 193 WHP
BMW advertises 225 crank HP, which is a 14% drive train loss. Not as bad as the 18% we're seeing on the G35, but not that far off.
This <a href="http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=173455&page=7&pp=25">thread</a> discusses the a stock E46 M3. They got 264 WHP. BMW advertises 333 crank HP. This is >20% drive train loss.

Re: G35s vs. 330i
Well im nto gonna lie, today was a great day for me!! I was always good at "driving" in general and i started at a real young age, today i drove all manuals considering i dont drive them ever and was instantly pushing them, chrping tires and everything with no problem at all!! Well me and my friend in his 330ci went at it, and yes i beat him every time in my auto g but thats with a lot of work done, his is stock!! He kept it close without me power breaking and with him launching then i just started pulling slowely, but from a roll i was eating him up. On the other hand, my friends Gcoupe 6 spd which i was driving all day felt 9249124x more powerfull and faster then the 330ci, but when they went at it the 330 was ahead by half a car, but thats with my friend just learning how to drive manual this week so!! They are very quick indeed!!

Re: G35s vs. 330i
If your talking about going fast in straight line (what fun is that), they're too close to call, and a ZHP should be faster every time with the same driver in either car. However, The G just doesn't handle or feel the same as a 3 series. I also own a 325i w/ SP, and the G does not have the same balance and flat neutral feel the 3 has in the twisties. The steering feel is leaps and bounds over the G as well, and there is just right amount feedback (the G has close to zero). If you haven't driven a 3 in the twisties, you won't get what I'm saying - probably.
With all that said, I love driving my G, and even w/prem and NAV, it was less $$$ than our 03' 325i.

Re: G35s vs. 330i
"For those claiming that the 330 only has 0-60 pull, take a look at the 0-100 numbers; the 330i is more then half a second faster.
G35 owns the 330.... RIGHT!"
Sorry but take a look at C&D who got the best times for the BMW 3 w/ZHP. The had 0-60 at 5.6, the 1/4 at 14.3 @97 mph and 0-100@ 15.3. 15.3???? Not faster than a G. The G in comparison at C&D got 5.6 to 60, 1/4 at 14.4 @98 mph and 0-100 at 14.6. 14.6! The G was accelerating rapidly by 100 and its supported by the trap @ 98mph. The BMW launches better but top end doesn't match.

Re: G35s vs. 330i
"It's a "me-too" car, that's all. You're talking about a car that costs $6K to $8K more than the G for zero, if not a negative advantage. Plus you don't even have either one. Thanks for your input, but no thanks. Better save your money for that 330i."
How is a 330 a me-too car? It offers the same acceleration and better overall handling than a G35 plus many will agree the 3-series exterior and interior wise is a couple notches higher than the G35. I guess if me-too means a superior performance car, then yes, the 330 is a me-too car.
You're right, I don't have a G35 nor a 3-series. I've researched both quite heavily and with used car prices, I could save a few thousand buying the 330 over the G35. The only tradeoffs I see are less interior room and the typical BMW reliability quirks. The advantage of the G35 to me is that I'm familiar with the VQ motor and know the is-an-outs of it and how to make it perform. In the end, I'll be buying neither. I'm buying a 3rd "fun" car which will either be a 93 Cobra, 98 Cobra, or possibly a friends 92 300ZXTT. With how quick my Maxima is, there's no reason to get rid of it. It's just as quick as a G35 or 330.

Re: G35s vs. 330i
DaveB, you should get the 300ZX. I absolutely adored my 96GXE (had FSTB, KYBs) but after having my G for a few months, I got back into the Max and the steering felt horrid (gave the Max to my mom). The Max was great for its time, pretty quick in a straight line but handling felt like crap. The rear beam suspension also made the ride harsh in the back. I actually like the 3.0 VQ BETTER than the 3.5. Sure the 3.5 produces more power but the 3.0 is much smoother and it revs so well to redline (very comparable to the 2JZE in the IS300 and the 3.0 L from BMW). I say get the 300ZX because it also handles quite well and can be made to go pretty fast. The Mustangs aren't the best handlers so get something that you can whip around corners. Thats the best part of having a G.

Re: G35s vs. 330i
shadeofgray,
My sister-in-law drives 02 325i and I got an opportunity to drive it for a couple of days and my impressions were quite opposite to yours in the handling department. I'd pick my sedan any day over the 325i. Now the SEATS - completely different story.
I can't talk about 330i with ZHP, because I've never driven one.
