Mine died on my '03 sedan. I bought an oem replacement but it has much fewer leds. Maybe 3 I think. It was pricy to buy and replace. PITA but it works now. I don't understand how that lite can die before the brake lites. Dealer said that is what the oem third lite looks like now. It's family car and I only drive 5K a year. I get my kicks on my BlackBird.

LED's are supposed to last a long time, but it depends on the components used. Cheap, crappy components can shorten the lifespan.
I beleive the issue with the light was one of the components failing. Some guys have resoldered new components on the board and fixed the issue.
Nissan may have redesigned the light, and if there are fewer LED's then it strongly suggests a redesign. The lens is a diffuser style, and the new LED's could be brighter than the originals.
In a way, they may awknowledge a design flaw, but if there hasn't been a recall or TSB issued, i highly doubt there will be now.
Not trying to be a negative nancy, but if someone is driving around with no 3rd light hoping Nissan will issue a recall, well i hate to be the bearer of bad news...but i wouldn't hold your breath at this point.
As i type that last line...i have a feeling once day, someone might requote that with a "You were saying???" sort of remark if Nissan DOES a recall

Just wanted to bump this thread again because I'll be attempting to replace mine with a new one from a 2009 Maxima. Not sure if anyone else has tried this or not, but you can pick them up brand new for $60-$70 online so it's worth a shot over spending $250 for one from Infiniti. Just from looking really quickly earlier it looks like I'll have to swap out the plug connector from my old one, but everything else looks like it should fit. I'll post updates when finished.
