Sway Bars

Why should I buy Sway Bars for the car? Are they really worth the cash? Which are the best?
The stearing seems pretty stiff stock. (I did not get the sport package though.)

Re: Sway Bars

I bought the Stillen sway bars and love the performance boost.
If I had to do it over again, I would have just bought a rear
sway bar. The front stock sway bar is MASSIVE and
really doesn't need replacement.

Re: Sway Bars

I just purchased the Stillen swaybars a week ago and it was definitly worth it. It's like a breath of fresh air. I really hated the understeer the car comes with.

I have the sport package on my car which is tighter than the regular setup but it still has a persistant problem with understeer. Understeer was a big problem when I took it out on the track. I put on the Stillen swaybars and the problem is completely gone. It handles much more like a sports car now.
The balance is much more neutral now. I can kick out the back end by simply stomping the gas pedal while going around a turn.

If you are a driving enthusiast I highly recommend it. Besides, you can buy them for only $280. It's worth it.

Re: Sway Bars

Sway Bars are one of those things that can make a big difference to the overall feel of your car for a reasonable cost. They don't have the "coolness" factor of something like a CAI, but can make much more difference!

Re: Sway Bars

Hydrazine,

What setting did you set your Stillen sway bars? Initially I went
Stiffest on both front and rear. After communicating with Q45tech,
I moved my front bar to the softest setting. Where are yours?

Re: Sway Bars

And how did you like the better turn in [higher front friction capability] that the softer front setting created?

Re: Sway Bars

I don't track my G... but do drive it agressive quite a bit.
I have never been able to force my G to understeer or
oversteer. But I did notice the front seems to "dive" more now
that I have the front bar on the wimpy setting.

Re: Sway Bars

Over the weekend, I was standing waiting for the light (NJ) to change when a white sedan pulled up to my sedan. As soon as the light changed green, he floored it and I took off right after him. Anyway, we get onto the West 78 and I could sense that I was going to catch up to him since there was a slight curve coming up before a straightaway and he was slowing down. What's more, I felt confident because I had my NISMO sway bars and I would certainly pass him there. Boy was I WRONG! OMG it was there that I almost totaled my car and almost skidded into his car. All I know is that as I hit the curve doing about 75 that my car under steered to the right and then I quickly cut the wheel to the left. Luckily I some how managed to regain control of the car and avoided his car in the process. However, it was the scariest moment of my life. Anyway, I think that I have learned my lesson and will try to avoid this kind of machismo in the future.

However, what really shocked me what that I had this false sense of security just because I had upgraded my sway bars...I should have known better!

Re: Sway Bars

Cato,

The Stillen sways were set to Medium/Medium. I was ready to set the front bar to its softest setting but I figured what the heck, I will try Q45's suggestion. (OEM up front.)

Now I have the OEM sway bar up front and the Stillen (set to medium) in the back. I havn't had a chance to really evaluate performance yet though. I suspect it could shift the car too much towards oversteer but only a good drive test can tell.

Re: Sway Bars

Unlikely since even the front oem bar is so very stiff.......you should be able to approach 120 lb/in rear bar [wheel rate] and stiff have neutral power off steering.
Obviously oversteer requires power on acceleration. When you let off [decelerate] the rear toe arms will allow more toe in which will be protective at least in dry weather.

Don't confuse the body sway for a lack of handling prowness.

Re: Sway Bars

hey, nutty. if ur plannin' on only using the rear bar, try getting the 350 EVO rear sway. its $175 compared to $275 say at Concept Z Performance for both. however, if you think your gonna use the front later down the line, then yeah, the Hotchkis are a great deal!

Re: Sway Bars

So you are recommending the Evo bar because of the price point? Performance wise the Evo is on par with the rear Hotchkis bar?

Re: Sway Bars

to my knowledge, there hasn't been a real study comparing these sway bars. there are many choices out there and Hotchkis seems to be the the most cost effective one for both sway bars. the reviews and recommendations of the people on here have all been positive no matter which brand they've gotten. i actually have not gone either way yet and am still reading and looking for feedback on which ones to get. right now, its either down to hotchkis or the EVO bar. but if i'm not going to be using the front bar, EVO would be the way to go for me. the owners of each brand say that the set they own is great and worth buying.

its just up to your personal peference of what you want. do you want adjustibility? if so, dont get the NISMO since they cannot be adjusted. i think stillen has five settings and all the othes have 3. but you have to buy all of them as a set (2 bars) except for the 350evo brand. also, if u want a certain percentage over stock, then that might sway you to pick a particular brand as well
