Front vs. Back brake usage

Just got mine 2004 G35x, Brilliant Silver/Graphite w/ moonroof for $5000 off MSRP on Wednesday 11/3, one day before the 2005s arrive at the dealer. Only have about 120 miles so far, already a speeding ticket on Saturday the first time I really test it out.

One thing I observe is that, both front wheels are now covered by a dust of black particles from the brakes but the rear wheels are still shiny. Is this normal?

Yes this is normal, annoying... but normal.

BMW's have been notorious for this for years.. I guess G35 has joined their class in this area too

There is a product called WheelWax which repels some (but not all) of this and it helps make them easier to clean.

Congrats on the new G.

Quite normal to have much more wear at the front than on the back, since the fronts do most of the work.

Brake-dust is a big problem with our g's, but a sacrifice for having such effective brakes.

Many, including myself, have found that keeping a good coat of wax on the front rims makes removing this dust much easier, and leaves a coating that the dust will not cling to as easily.

Yes, the braking bias is a lot more towards the front. Your front brakes are doing the majority of the work while the rears have it easy. That's why you see a lot more brake dust on your front wheels while your rears are still relatively clean. Here's a good technical article on brake bias and why it matters.

Re: Front vs. Back brake usage

great article!!
I just skimed through it and it make sense why front brakes need to be oversized even for a 50/50 front to rear balanced car like ours.

Re: Front vs. Back brake usage

When my G was new, I replaced the front pads with EBC Greenstufs. These so-called "organic" pads give me the same feel and stopping power as the OEM pads with almost no brake dust. They seem to be wearing quite well to boot. I highly recommend the EBC pads .

I also replaced the OEM front pads with EBC greenstuff pads, immediately, on delivery. I'd used them before on an Audi that had the same dust problem. The EBCs are terrific; feel is even better than OEM and basically no dust.

What kind of mileage are you getting out of those pads?

No obvious wear at 7500 miles.

That's not bad, perhaps once the warranty passes I will switch.

I see they even make bicycle pads, I wonder if those fit any bike disc's or if the whole system has to be switched.

Re: Front vs. Back brake usage

Same here. 7500 mile inspection showed very little wear.

I have no regrets giving up the brake warranty. The EBC pads are well worth it. I like having clean wheels and hate cleaning them.
