Can't move the shifter from park

2003 infiniti g35, sedan - automatic
once the car is in park i can't move the shifter to any other gears.
Sometimes it will work fine, but almost always it locks.

The only way to move the shifter is to use the shift lock by the shifter.

Anybody knows what this could be and how to fix it???

Thank you in advance!

When you put your foot on the brake pedal, do you hear a loud clicking noise from the center console area?

No, there is no clicking or any other noise anywhere. The break pedal feels the same when the shifter works and when it doesn't.

Well that's your issue, but unfortunately i don't know enough about it to describe a fix. When you hit the brakes, a solenoid is activated that allows the shifter to shift. In normal application (even with car off) hitting the brake pedal causes a loud click each time in the center console.

I *think* it may be tied into the brake light switch. Do your brake lights work? Or it could be a dead solenoid? Like i said, i don't know enough to recommend a fix, but that's where you need to start looking

first is try you brakes and see if the lights work. If they do then follow your way up to the solenoid thats in the shifter assembly and see if its getting a +12 on one of the two pins if it does get +12 then you know its the solenoid

I am sorry guys.... I forgot to mention that I actually changed the solenoid and it worked as I pulled away from the shop, stopped working the same day.
The break lights do work, except the 3rd break light which seems to be a common problem in the G35s.
*** What do you mean +12 on one of the two pins??

Sorry I don't have nearly as much knowledge as you guys do in this field.

Thank you again for helping!

(disclaimer) I know very little about automatics and what lets them go into gear or not but after I took apart my center console and installed my PAC audio unit up under the dash I had the same problem.
I took apart the console again, assuming something was in the the way or I had put something together wrong. Couldn't see anything wrong so I put it back together again and it went into reverse. Hit the gas and backed out into the road and it got stuck again (in the middle of the road) . Took the console off it went back into D so I pulled it back in my driveway.
I checked everything again, assumed it was something with the shift lock or a solenoid/switch/fuse even though I hadn't messed with anything (this is my first auto car in a looong time), checked every fuse, checked under the car, under the hood, looked online for hours and finally gave up for the day. Went to put it back together and noticed the plastic shift gate was loose and bent/crooked so when I would try to shift it would bind up. Tightened up the the screw, lined the gate where it was supposed to go and went down the road It's a long shot (and I don't know if the 03 and 06 models even use the same parts there) but worth a check

You say that you just replaced the solenoid though? Did you know it was bad the first time? Did you replace it with a new one (I've bought faulty new parts though so that doesn't rule out anything). I've also had issues with a previous cars starter solenoid which I believe I traced back to a faulty negative battery cable. A loose battery cable or dying battery can cause all kinds of stupid issues I don't know if these cars have any sort of brake pedal safety switch that would stop it from going out of drive?

Good luck.

First of all.... thank you IAMTIMSHADY!!!
The solenoid is brand new, or at least that's what the shop said since I was stupid enough to let somebody else do it.
I am going to check the gate. My brother did some research and believes that this will solve the issue. I have a good feeling about this
I will let you know if it works.

Thank you again for your help!
