Rusted out muffler flange

Living in the northeast, I figured it would only be a matter of time before I'd have so exhaust rust issues.

Last few months, the exhaust tone on my g35 has gotten a bit louder. Today I found the source while changing my spark plugs. Started the car out and noticed condensation from the exhaust (car was sitting over a rainy weekend) and noticed water dripping where it shouldn't be.

Leak right at the flange, looks like the flange rotted away and it's starting to separate. The dark area is the inside of the pipe

Has anyone every repaired this? I guess I could have a muffler shop cut and weld a pipe in, or just sawzall the flange off and install a slip on coupling?

I already have this with 2 clamps, so basically a free repair.

I also found this thread with this repair.

I hate the idea of welding because if I ever need to change the pipe or muffler, I need to go to a shop to weld. I hate being tethered like that because I'm a DIYer.

Is the seal a ball and socket? I'd like to order the flanges ($15 each) but unsure if I can use them because it looks like the socket on mine pulled apart. I would need to take the muffler flange apart first to check. Otherwise I'll use the slip on coupling and clamp it.

Anyone have their stock muffler handle and can snap pics of the flanges?

PS. Did my spark plugs today at 111K miles. Plugs still looked decent. No change on the butt-o-meter in terms of the car running any different.

That my friend, is the reason i bought my Y back megan racing exhaust. Mine looked just like that. Im a DIY kinda guy as well. I didnt want any pipes welded in either. So rather then put lipstick on a pig, i bit the bullet and bought the exhaust, and i love it. But i know not everyone would wana go that route. It wasnt cheep or easy. So good luck to you my good man, let us know how you make out.

Not really looking to put money into mods here. I'd love a new exhaust, but the money is needed elsewhere with a baby on the way.

I'm really just temped to go under there, cut the flange off, slide the pipe over the ends and clamp it all and call it a day.

Thats what a muffler shop did for me. EXACTLY the same problem on my 05. funny thing, when i was there i saw a 04 g35x WITH THE EXACT same problem.

I didn't have the time so i paid them $45 to torch off the flanges and weld on a connection pipe. All is well and i dont have to care anymore about it

Wow that rust is pretty bad! I'm pretty sure the method you are going to use should work for the time being but I'd eventually look for a more permanent solution.

I'm sure i can just have it welded. Hell, in a few months when i have access to a lift, I'll just roll under there and weld it myself (yes i can do that)

I'm almost tempted to look for some replacement exhaust parts from the south for cheap and just swap out everything when the rust gets bad enough. The ONLY part of the car that's rusting up like this is the exhaust, and the flange it the worst part. The cat heat shields aren't doing well, but the converters are still fine.

I'm not looking to drop big $$$...but I don't want to do a half-*** repair job either.

F*ck salt. Seems our exhuast system rusts really bad. My flange on my 05 looks just as bad, only a matter of time before it rots all the way through. And something is rattling really bad on mine after a cold start, I think its the rusty cat heat shields.

You can also just have new flanges put on, although obvioulsy more work..

Mine looked pretty much like yours, I bought a Magnaflow Axle Back and had the shop install a new flange on both sides..

Not yet. I bought parts to make the repair, but actually doing it has been low on my priority list. With winter here, and it being cold and snow flying here and there, i'm debating just going to a muffler shop and paying them to cut the flange off and weld a pipe in.

I wanna fix it soon though because now that there is a large leak, the exhaust note is louder. Despite many people wanting a louder exhaust, I am not one of them.
