Just bought a 05 sedan with auto trans. Loving the car but I noticed a funny smell from the exhaust. I've smelled this before in my lifetime I just can't put a finger on it. It's not oil and I don't think it's sweet like antifreeze. I dont know just wondering if anyone has ideas or similar odd smells. Thanks

Cat converter is pretty common. Wouldnt worry unless its smokin

 

Cat more than likely, it has a very distinct smell to it. I can smell it sometimes after some spirited driving.

 

Yup mine smells like *** after some hoonage.

 

might wanna check the pipes see if u ran over any plastic bags that melted onto the pipes.

 

thanks guys that makes sense. i knew ive smelled that before i just couldnt say for sure. i did say the cat as a possibility. i did notice some light smoke the other night when i had a car behind me. it was humid out and more like a vapor than actually smoke.

 

Had the same thing happen with my 06 5at sedan. Turns out the dealership overfilled the trans and it was venting access fluid right onto the cats. Would only see the faint smoke at stoplights and after parking. It always had that funny smell too. Look under the car with good flashlight right where the cats are and see if there is any oily reddish colored fluid on them. Dealership degreased exhaust system for free and re serviced my transmission....hope that helps.

No I haven't noticed it for a few days now. My coolant overflow tank was low I just noticed that and gotta get a funnel so I don't get **** all over. I don't think it was coolant smell cause I've smelled that before

 

Sounds like transmission fluid. The vent on the transmission is just above thee bellhousing and drips onto the cats directly. It is a flawed design....
