Grinding at startup

I have a 05 I purchased about a month ago and swear I've heard a grinding noise at startup a couple times. It almost sounds like when you hit the starter when a car is running. Anyone else experience this? I'm taking the car in for an oil change, but since it only happens on occasion I'm afraid they will not be able to locate the problem.

Harley01,

Interesting...I think I have heard something similar in my 05x. The 'grinding' noise occurs at the very end after the engine has turned over. I was thinking maybe it's the exhaust manifold or some heat shield that is vibrating at engine start. Hmmm...think I will pay closer attention to it. Please let us know what your dealer finds. Thanks.

Have the same sound periodically, particularly at "cold" start. My service guy at Infiniti stopped me halfway through my explanation and told me it was a known characteristic of the G.....

Check your oil level guys. The VQ is a known oil burner. I complained to the service tech about the same problem. They couldn't duplicate it. I took it back and found the oild level to be low.

Timing chain rasp on start up until it gets some oil on it.
Typical of Nissan/Infiniti. no worries.

Thanks GSedanman....that makes sense. So will you get the sound regardless of your oil level?

By the way, you need to change your name....maybe Msedanman : )

I don't hear it when the oil level is right.
