Is it me, or do the 05' G35's not really pull when going WOT above 70mph?

The 05' G35 sedan is suppose to come with 298hp, but on the highway it felt as slow as my old 98' 328is bmw (when stock). I almost couldn't tell their was a pull other than the engine screaming. Then we decided to mod the G35 with:
1. Stillen Catback exhaust (claims 22rwhp on website, I assume 10rwhp HP)
2. 3/8th spacer (many claims no proof..I will say 1rwhp)
3. Grounding kit- (assume 2 rwhp...some claim 5rwhp)
4. Full pulley set- (assume 6 rwhp...many claim 7-10hp)
5. Injen CAI- (assume 6 rwhp...claims are 8-11hp)
6. Technosport software- (assume 8 hp...preliminary claims are 11rwhp)
Total= +33rwhp or ~39hp gained at the crank (my scaled back #'s should account for exaggerated claims and the fact that you can't just add up hp).

After the mods the car feels a LITTLE more lively in all parts of the rev band, but it still doesn't feel like even a 300hp car. What gives? Is the car deceptively fast, do mods not really help much (even though there are countless posts talking about the added pull from just one of the mods on my list), or is our top end crap? Any feedback would be appreciated.

B
P.S. My GF raced a 320hp 996 4s from 80-120 and he inched away by about 2.5 cars (she left it in 4th gear). I assume that isn't too bad right? The Porche is as fast as my M3 (stock), but my M3(stock) pulled MUCH harder on the freeway. Ok enough rambling....help.

I think you're on to something with the last bit. A mid- to low-14 second car isn't anything extraordinary nowadays, but I'll say that my old Altima 3.5 SE 5-speed felt quicker in a straight line in any situation I can rememeber. Was it? Nope, don't think so, unless I had a really strong Altima then and own a really weak G35 now (always a possibility). The acceleration numbers for the cars are pretty similar, with the nod to the G35.

So why does my brain try to trick me into thinking the G is slower?

One word: refinement. The Altima was a bag of bolts. You felt and heard every road imperfection in that car. Leaving a stoplight like you meant it and running to 60 or so was a much more visceral experience in the Altima, and while I'm all for that sort of thing in a car, it was not a pleasant experience relatively speaking. The G35 is quiet, well-insulated and tight as as drum. The powertrain has no lash, unlike the rubber-band Altima. And the chassis is worlds away.

To use a bad analogy, driving a go-kart at 20 mph can feel death-defyingly fast. The G35 is no go-kart.

I agree that this car doesn't "feel" like I imagined a 300hp car typically would, but the numbers don't lie. To me, acceleration in the auto feels much faster, but I guess it's all about the gearing. It's certainly not as fast as an EVO or STI in a straight line, but the combination of handling, looks, comort, etc. matters more than it's straight 0-60.

It only makes sense when I "race" my buddy with his modded WRX that this car is deceptively fast. Having owned 2 Altimas, my G coupe, and a Z, I can tell you that the Z felt the fastest, then the sedan, then my coupe, then my Altimas....either way, my car is damn quick, and I have no complaints about its ability to haul ***.

Seriously, the car doesn't even pull as hard as my old e36 m3 convertable at highway speeds and that car was just as refined. That car was a mid 14 second car. I guess what I am missing with the G35 is the kick and then pull at highway speeds. The car just feels like it has no kick, just a WEAK feeling pull. It feels like it is inching faster....is this how a 330+hp car should feel? The S-500 is one of the most refined (you weren't even meant to feel the speed) cars and it feels like its pulling much harder. Considering it weighs at least 500-800lbs more and has less HP....I am stumped! Thank you for any feedback.

P.S. Shouldn't I feel a big difference with 32+hp gains? With my M3 I could feel 10hp gains(nothing less though).

I mean, I just got back from a freeway run, and I stomped on it and in autotragic manual mode downshifted to 3rd and the car hauls? Maybe there's something with your car? Diagnostics may help determine if you have something wrong, or check for leaks or, crap, I don't know....but if you stomp on it, it should be moving....

My friends 540i is fast, very fast. 5.4 0-60, but you can hardly notice it because of how quiet and smooth it is.

Bogie,
Not to rain on your parade, but I really doubt your mods added 33hp.

To be sure, take it to the dyno, prefferably Dynojet. Stock 298hp engine should dial close to 245-250whp with 1.00 correction factor.

With your mods I'd be surprised to see anything beyond 265whp.

I agree the car doesn't feel that fast but pull up next to a BMW330 Coupe and let her fly. Now, depending on the driver's shifting skills you will surprised how well the G does. I got away from one once and he tried all he could to stay close to me but couldn't catch me.

I smell a rat where Bogie is concerned. Check out the last 2 threads he's started.

"Is anyone disappointed with their G?" and...
"Is it me, or do the 05' G35's not really pull when going WOT above 70mph?"

He sounds like a disgruntled TL owner to me. First of all, why would you buy a $35K car without THOROUGHLY checking it out. Secondly, if you are seriously unhappy with it, get rid of it.

I love my G. LOVE IT!!! I can smoke any Acura TL or BMW 3-series off the block and in a slalom. And the icing on the cake is that it looks better than the competition as well. Sorry bogie, but you're barking up the wrong tree here.

the engine really doesn't get started until over 4K. The higher you rev it, the more it is pulling.

Are you winding it up?

BobbyG123, do your homework before you acuse me of being an Acura owner. This thread is my 1st thread that I have EVER started. Try going to M3forum.com and doing a search for Bogie and tell me what kind of Acura I am sporting.

B
P.S. I love my GF's G35. It is a hell of a car for the price.

I smell vermin poon tang. I don't believe the 2005 sedan comes with 298 HP. That is the coupe. If you owned one, would you not know that?
