RPM's reading too high

Does anyone have this problem? Whenever I start my car sometimes it reads at 2600rpm rather than 600rpm at idle, but the engine is not actually idling at 2600. It just reads 2000rpm's higher than it should.

It doesn't false read. Every modern engine with automatic choke, when started will run on higher RPM for a couple of minutes (or longer depends on the outside temp), until the engine is brought to a working temp. As the engine gradually reaches optimal working temp, the ECU will gradually bring the RPMs down.

So how do you know it's reading higher?

even so, i don't think my car has ever hit 2600 rpms during a cold start in the morning. IIRC, it usually idles at ~2000rpms for a bit during morning cold starts.

Actually 2600 sounds about right.

the funny thing is even after i turn off my car the needle doesn't return to zero. it sometimes stays at 1000 or 2000. i think you're right though SPEED, it has been 100 degrees almost every day down here.

i thought it might've been reading too high on the tachometer because my dad floored it twice when i was only at 200 miles on the odometer. thanks for the replies

My car does the same thing sometimes, even though it's 95 degrees outside. I was wondering why it does this. When I put in it drive, the rpm goes back down.

My G idles at about 2200 for an instant and drops to just below 1000 within 30 seconds, granted in hot summer weather. Probably a longer wait when the temperature drops.

I always wait 'til the RPMs drop to 1000 before I engage any gears or turn on A/C.

that's exactly what happens, sometimes if i accidentally leave the AC on before i shut down the car, it idles high the next time i turn it on. i guess the ecu knows what it's doing...im kinda glad some of you are experiencing this too. sometimes it gets up to 3000 rpm on occasion.
