U Haul trailer for moving?

I'm moving to Oregon from California this winter and was thinking of getting a U Haul Cargo Trailer 4' x 8'. Does anyone know if this is a bad idea or good? I don't have a lot of stuff really but I don't have enough room to cram it into my sedan.

"The allowed cargo weight (the amount of weight you can put in a trailer) is based on your vehicle's curb weight (3,500 lbs.), the trailer's capacity and your hitch rating."

Might want to check out USHIP. They bid on it and have reviews. They took my uncle's Benz and a few other household items from Michigan to Dallas for around $600. They usually have other freight, so you would have to have everything packed up in a pod type container.

I'll have to try that; it looks like a good website. Hopefully I get something cheaper then a uhaul with a auto carrier for $800 dollars.

Or you could have them haul everything you can't fit in your car and drive your car out there.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking in this thread. DO you want to know if it's a good idea to rent a trailer? Or to tow that trailer with your G ?

I'd say another possibility is to do a one-way rental one of U-Haul's 10' (truck based) moving vans and one of their car carriers (NOT a dolly). Load the van with your stuff, put your car on the trailer, and drive on down to Cali.

It was about towing the cargo trailer with my G sedan. The Uhaul 10' truck with the car carrier is quite expensive so I'm just looking to cut costs on moving since I didn't have a ton of stuff.

Well, As far as whether or not your car could do it, sure, it's do-able. I'm just not a fan of trailer hitches on a nice car. If I had to have one, I'd be PARTICULARLY CAREFUL about the "who/what/how" on the install. I've heard some really scary things about both amateur and U-Haul installed hitches. They included structural issues, esthetic damage issues, wiring issues, etc.

Also, have you factored the cost of a quality hitch and professional install (and subsequent de-installation most likely) into the overall cost comparison??

You shouldn't tow more than 1,000lbs, total with a G35. What is the weight of the 4'x8' trailer? According to this, it's 850lbs. This does not leave much room for loading items.
Although the car has plenty of power, the transmission, drivetrain, suspension and breaking are simply not setup for regular towing. If you are cautious, tow less than 1,000lbs, don't accelerate hard, leave plenty of room/time for breaking, take corners slowly, then you will be fine.

Search also found many towing threads...here are just a few

Going from Cali to Oregon(oops), I wouldn't even think about it. Other options will be much less in the long run. I am sure your going over hills/mountains and that won't bode well for you "G"

Yeah, looking more at the shipping of my household goods now. Thought about my transmission and the hills and Oregon/California pass.
