Limit On # Of Songs On Cf?

I just got this really cheap deal on a 8gb CF card, and I loaded all of my 1100 songs on there, but when I got home and put the card in it said there were only 512 songs? Why is there a limit on how many songs can be on a card?

There is another thread in this forum that mentions the limit. It's probably not a card issue, more of an operating system (software) limitation.

Unfortunately the G shows only 512 songs from the card.

Pretty dumb limitation really - but what can you do ???

Not much. Return/re-sell the card and get yourself a pair of 4GB cards.

Not sure why they put a 512 file limit (and a 255 folder limit) but they did. You'll also see it referenced on the voice cheat sheets.

I found the 2GB card works out perfect. I converted 512 tracks to Mp3 and it took up 1.8GB on the CF cards ( ie an average of 3.5 mb per song). I used 128 kbps bit rate in creating the mp3 files.

But a 4GB would allow me to store 512 larger files ( ie longer tracks if I had them and/or higher quality) so that's a good choice as well.

I was thinking actualy of getting a few more cards, and I would simply have a Jazz CF, a SoftRock CF and a Rhythm & Blues CF. Would love to use just one 8 GB if I could but I cant.

Anyone have the basic instructions on how you can download songs from your PC/ipod to a scan disk card?

1) Insert a compact flash (CF) card into a card reader (which connects via USB cable to your PC)

2) The compact flash card will appear as a hard drive ; just drag/copy your MP3 files to it using Windows Explorer...or ITunes etc.

Have anyone tried a SD to CF adapter on their G? I tried and it can't find any audio files. I got this car preowned so I want to see if it's the car or a compatibility with an adapter.

As long as the format is correct on the card it should work fine, it MUST be FAT32 (or 16/12 but just go 32 because it's a native format). You can format them on a PC if it comes as exFAT format.

I tried FAT32 and it didn't work. I format it to FAT and it recognized. I have a 4GB CF though.
I loaded 2 eBook MP3 and it took 600MB already.
