TPMS Problem

A while back my G developed a fault in the TPMS system and gave me a C1710 code, indicating it wasn't getting a signal from the right rear. I rotated the tires yesterday and cleared the code, and now the same code is back. If my logic serves me well this eliminates the sensor as the problem, since it would have indicated the right front after the rotation. Am I right with this thought process? If so that narrows it down to the receiver and the BCM. I feel that it's more likely the receiver, as I haven't developed any other issues with the car, so hopefully that's indicative of the BCM being ok. I know this has likely happened before and I'm curious what you all did to remediate the problem.

Even if you rotate it, the receiver is still looking for the same sensor ID. Regardless where you move it, the sensor will not tell the receiver that it's now in a new location. That sensor ID is program to a specific location on the receiver side.

Example:

Front-Left: ID 12345678-1 ----- Front-Right: ID 12345678-2

Rear-Left ID: 12345678-3 ------ Rear- Right: ID 12345678-4

How old are your sensors ? If they're the factory originals, I'll put money on it it simply needs replaced. You can buy them yourself and places like Discount Tire, Walmart's tire centers, etc will install/program them, at least for cheaper than if you bought them from these stores. Or if you will be buying new tires soon, you could buy them and hold on to them until then. They might only charge you the programming fee then.

Sensor is mounted on the tire, receiver is mounted on the knuckle. Probably a bad receiver, unplug the harness and spray it out with electrical contact cleaner (make sure it says it's safe for plastic), let it dry and plug it back in.

If the code comes back you probably need to replace it.

Ok, this is my first vehicle with TPMS installed, so I figured it was a transmitter and a close proximity receiver. Thanks for the run down.

I'll bet that they're the originals, only had her a year at this point.

Seeing as how this is the least intrusive, I'll start here. New tires are going on in spring.

Buy sensors now to have ready to go into the new tires. Ten years is pretty damn good time to get out of them (presuming they're factory originals) considering what fails is usually just the battery dies. From that timeframe, 10 years seems to be typical. Newer ones are shorter sadly.

When I replaced mine, the batteries hadn't died but the stems had corroded enough that they were leaking air. I had them repaired or "rebuilt" with no success. Not sure where you're located but if your roads see snow/ice and salt, that makes it even worse.

New tires, light went away, not sure why, but I'm not complaining.
