which radar detector do you recommend?

I've got the Escort passport 9500ix and love it. I might sell it to you if you're interested though, since I don't drive my car much. It was $500+tax, I'll let it go for $425 if you pick it up (also include the stealthcord that was $15 to direct wire it to your mirror). I'm in norcal as well

Although Valentine 1 is a great radar, it's design has not changed very much in the past few years.
I currently own a Passport 9500ix like elayman. I like it a lot. It's programmed with a database of redlight and speed trap cameras and will go off and say "Redlight camera ahead.." and display how many hundreds of feet until you arrive at said camera. This feature can be updated (which unfortunately costs money), but I think you get a few months or a year of updates free at first.
It also announces what radar it detects (i.e. "K-Band" ... can be turned of if it annoys you) followed by displaying the speed at which you are going (according to GPS).
Also, if it senses radar in the same spot 3 times, it "learns" that location and no longer goes off (which, of course, can be overidden).
It's pretty expensive at $500, though. Then again, it's certainly saved my a$$ a few times in my one trip up to NorCal. I'm hoping it does the same for my trip back to SoCal for winter break.
Good luck with your choice.
