Hello, I have an 05 Coupe 6MT with the Rev-Up engine.
Just a few questions revolving around the same thing: how do I know when I’m messing up my clutch?
My car currently has 93k miles, and it runs and shifts perfectly. It’ll go through all the gears perfectly when I’m doing regular driving and also if I do a pull.
The highest I’ve ever gotten it up to is under 6k RPM, and I probably do usually just 2 pulls every time I take it out, and I don’t go over those RPM’s because I’m too worried. xD
Anyway, is it okay if I can push a little more RPM’s without causing any extensive wear on the clutch? And also, what do I specifically look out for on a 6MT like this for any transmission issues following the pull/in general?
The only thing that wears on the transmission is the synchros, if it goes smoothly into each gear then yours is still in good condition. Eventually they will start to hang up and not want to go smoothly into gear, at that point you can rebuild the transmission or just live with it. Manual trannies can be limped along for 300k+ miles, they almost never experience a kaboom unless you run them out of gear oil.
Change the oil every 20k miles, I preferred Redline MT-85 on my CD009 that had some synchro wear. I've been using it in my new CD00A as well because I had such great experience with it.
As for the clutch, as long as the pedal is not being depressed when you're accelerating hard then the clutch should be fine and locked in, if you notice your rpm's jump a little but the speed of the vehicle doesn't match that jump then your clutch may be worn and slipping.
As for the rpm, you're fine up to the rev limiter, don't be afraid to use the end of the range on the track or getting up to highway speed, you're not going to hurt anything as long as you keep up on your oil change intervals and check the oil level regularly. These things do drink oil so I'd recommend checking it and topping it off weekly.
High rpm's isn't going to affect the clutch AT ALL, it's not even slipping when the pedal is fully released, it's 100% locking the engine rpm to the transmission input rpm, no slip unless the clutch is worn out.
You know you're messing up your clutch if you drive around touching the pedal between shifts, or if you are feathering the clutch for a long time and not releasing the pedal fast enough. You'll know if you really screw up because it's going to make this horrific chemical burning smell that will last for an hour.
I'd recommend you stand on the throttle and hit the rev-limiter just to remove any fear that you're going to blow up the engine, it limits at 7100 (rev-up) but on a stock engine it's getting out of it's powerband at that point. MREV2, spacer, HFC, exhaust, tune it's still pulling hard at that point though.
If you disconnect the battery you will need to reprogram the REV shift light. It defaults at something like 4200 rpm I think. Play around with different rpm settings, it will flash before you get to the setting then go solid after you hit the setting.
